Spindle Length Question

I am putting a new Sugino XD500 triple crank and new cartridge-type BB on a '83 Miyata 610. The old "cup and cone" BB spindle I removed seems long----124 mm (excluding the threaded ends). I think it was original, but can't be sure. The bike was a CL find, and I rode it very little before stripping it down.

Question: What length BB spindle seems right in this case? What will give me the optimal chain line? I am putting a new 7-speed Shimano freewheel on the original hub. The spacing between the rear DO's is 126 mm.

THANKS!

To me, 124mm sounds right for a vintage touring bike set up with a vintage triple. Your new crankset, however, might work with something shorter. Does Sugino offer any recommendations?

Sugino recommends a 113 mm spindle for road bikes.

For a triple?! Wow! Guess I'm stuck in my Stronglight 49D/TA Pro Vis 5 world (though the Sugino AT I have on a Raleigh International uses a 122mm BB).

A Sugino XD500 is not a vintage crank, so it uses a shorter spindle like other modern cranks.
