That's the same computer I use from dealextreme. Good computer although the mounting of the magnet was a smidge iffy. Had to go up one size screw. Works great though.

I'm really glad to hear that, and thanks for the tip about the magnet mounting screw. It's really incredible how much satisfaction you can get for $6.

But think about it. The cyclocomputer was invented in the late 70's, just a few years after the digital watch. There are probably not many chips in all the various models. The design is well understood, and tooling is long since paid for. Like digital watches, it just doesn't take much to produce them any more. There's not much reason to pay much for them any more.

The screen, and mounting hardware etc all look EXACTLY like the Bell branded computer I mentioned earlier. I'd bet it is the same computer under a different case. Like I said, I am very happy with how simple it is and how well it works. My one and only gripe is that the wire is a bit flimsy. I broke one just twisting the unit around my bar. But for under $10, I can't complain.

Cateye strada cadence (wired) has always worked well for me. Had this cheap Delta Ascent (I think) wireless one that was giving me freakishly high speeds and then stopped working. Tossed it, went to my strada and have been happy ever since/

You can't go wrong with Cateye.

i'm a little late to this thread. i have the planet bike protege 9.0, and it's been great over the 4 years i've had it. it has survived 4 years in all sorts of weather, and has never skipped a beat (except this past summer after getting doused in pouring rain for seven hours straight... took a few days of drying out to work properly again):

Well, after much thought this is what I ended up with, and it works great. I was going to spend more but I thought I would try this for about $10.00 and if I did not like it then no real big loss. It does everything I need and more.

Back on topic: I don't believe it's necessary for most of us to spend much on a bike computer. The standard features are easy to get.

thanks, noglider! i agree, most basic functions can be had on the cheapest computers. my only concerns with the really cheap ones are weather resistance and overall reliability. the only reason i paid a little more for the planet bike one that i have was to get the temperature function. it's pretty accurate and helps me determine whether i should worry about ice when i'm riding in winter.

I'm currently running with the Cateye Strada Wireless. It has all the basic functions. It seems to be plenty accurate comparing to my brothers $400 Garmin when we are out riding together. Picked it up relatively cheap on sale for about $40.

Planet Bike seems to offer sensible products at sensible prices. Who are they? I like them.
