A touring project(flea market find)
Picked this one up at the flea market today, looks rough but it's actually in pretty good shape except for the rear wheel which is not original, rear derailleur and seat, it even has original "specialized" pedals. Perfect at 56cm.

Nice! I love darker/more serious colours like that charcoal for touring bikes. Throw a Brooks on that and call it done!

What a find! If you have any questions about the value of the bike, you might want to post on this forum: https://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/MiyataSpecTour/ It is devoted to the Miyata 1000 & Specialized Expedition. I think it is pretty unanimous that the top 3 off-the-shelf vintage touring bikes are the Miyata 1000, Trek 520, & the Expedition. Although there are others that should be in the mix IMHO. I also think it is pretty well founded that Miyata made the frame for the Exped. Miyata, 2 out of 3, not bad.
It's not surprising that the RD was replaced, The Suntour Montech was prone to catastrophic failure according to Sheldon Brown. The frame, which is the real jewel of the bike, seems to be in very good condition. If it fit you and shifts properly, I agree with the others, ride the sucka knowing that your riding one very desirable bike in some circles.
BTW, I don't think the bars and levers are original. I believe that's an 85 which came with Suntour Superbe levers, Shimano Deer Head brakes, & Sakae Ringyo bars as I recall. They weren't ergo. I think I have a picture here somewhere if you would like to see.

Wow, super find at that price. That would be a keeper for sure. Jan pointed out the wheelbase, I think I could fit my closed fist in between the seat tube and rear tire!

So how do you plan to accessorize? What racks? What fenders? Do you tour now? What touring do you have planned (or at least dreamed of)?

Love it, WHAT A FIND! Also a great deal. The flea market vendors around here never have especially good deals on bikes...they always want craigslist level pricing.
I'd like to add the Lotus Odyssey to the list above. Bonus, they tend to sell a lot cheaper because of less brand recognition.
