Just to throw in another one, I'm only 5'6"-5'7" and am finding I prefer a 54-56cm. So within this thread alone we have a range from multiple people 5'6"ish all the way to someone who's 6'1" that all prefer ~55cm.
Go test ride it! That's the best way to figure it out. |
I have a 62cm bike, a 60 cm bike, a 23", a 24" and a 21" bike. They all fit. Some are different types of bikes, some are measured differently. A person who rides a 54cm road bike may be totally comfortable on a 17" mountain bike and a 23" touring bike.

If this is a 830 Trek, it's a mtb, and your road bike height doesn't correlate to mtb's. A 54cm road bike requirement is equivalent to a 18" (stated) mtb frame.
The mtb BB height is higher than road bikes. |
Also 5'7" on a good day and riding a 56cm. I suspect a 53-54cm would be even better (my seatpost is up half a fist) but as long as I mount and dismount carefully it's all good.

To prove how far these can range: I'm 6' 1", have more torso than legs, and prefer a good bit of saddle to bar drop. My ideal size is 55 - 56cm for most geometries. On some geometries, (usually with modern bikes), I prefer a 54cm.

There is no substitute for getting on the bike and riding 5 miles. I've found too, that knowingly or not, people misrepresent their height in most cases. It doesn't mean much when it comes to fitting a bike. I'm around 5'11". I have long legs. Pants inseam is also pretty meaningless when it comes to bike fit. I ride 63cm c-t-c traditional geometry road bikes.

Intriguing. However, one of my riding buddies is also 6'1", riding a 58, and has about the same setup as I do (setback seat post, 120mm -17 degree stem, saddle to bar drop).
