Old Guerciotti serial number identification needed. Any advice is appreciated.
Hi,
I am the original owner of a 1980's Guerciotti SL frameset. I am trying to determine
when the frame was actually made. the bottom bracket has several embossed/stamped markings on it that reads 3TSD80 and 53 on the opposite edge of the BB. TSD is Ten Speed Drive, but is the 80 the year of manufacture?
I don't know what the #3 indicates. Would anyone know? Your help is greatly appreciated.
Ed

how in the *$#@ did "Gooch" ever get to be a contraction of Guerciotti? I know how to pronounce it and "gooch" is not even close!
I have no problem with Pug, Pog, Nago...even the (ridiculous) British-ism of putting a hard "G" on Campag... but a man's got to have some limits.
OK, my rant's over.

"gue" in Italian isn't pronounced like goo. Think "gw". Gware-cho-tee.
Edit: If you're curious why it's not pronounced like Gucci, it's because of the vowel that follows the u. That's why it's gw, not goo.

That reminds me of using the term "Campy". Inevitably some %$@9 will chime in and say it's "Campa".

Well, here is a picture of the bottom bracket showing the before mentioned stamped markings. Also I have included some more detailed
photos of the frame itself, if that helps any.

Wow. I don't think I have seen the Guerciotti on the seat stays in cursive before. Could this be the "missing link" transition when they went from pre-83 block lettering to the cursive "Paolo Guerciotti" Beautiful bike.

Well, first off it has Campy long dropouts, so it's gotta be earlier than 1980. Additionally, it has no engraving on the top of the fork crown. One more neat thing: star cutouts in all 3 lugs - and the top point of the star is much longer (and thinner) than most of the star cutouts I've seen. There were also at least three different 'signatures' for the seatstay caps: yours, block lettering and a later 'Guerciotti' that looked exactly like the Paolo Guerciotti signature decal. I'd heard of the earlier, third version but never saw it until seeing your pics today. Looks exactly like the pantographing on the Guerciotti stems.
I had a tiny (48cm) Guerciotti that was right around 1979 and it had short, Portacatena-tapped Campy dropouts, fatter star cutouts and the star and 'G' in the fully-sloping fork crown. It also had the block lettering style on the seatstay caps, a similar star cutout in the BB shell and different, more tube-like cable guides brazed on the bottom.
Yours has all the hallmarks of mid-70s vice early 80s. And I gotta tell you this: that's the best looking Guerciotti I have ever seen, bar none! You should do a big-picture post dedicated to that lovely rig (right Gomango?).
Please?

Aging bike riders like myself love huge pictures of beautiful bikes.
This looks like a fine example for the "big picture" approach.

FWIW i've been trying to identify mine for 3 months.
I finally got an email from Alessandro Guerciotti. All he had to say was "it's really very old" from the 80's.
Wow that's helpful!
I've looked at catalogs from 1983-1988 and none have internal cable routing or really sleek non boxy forks. i guess i'll never know.

You're right Drillium. I just found a 1975 strada with the cursive seat stays. But it had the standard shaped stars on the lugs and pantographed forks. I wonder if this was one of the initial frames destined for TSD. Maybe before they started importing large numbers? That paint is immaculate. Any date on the rear derailleur? Does the crank look 70's or 80's?
Epicus07- post up some pics of yours.

Here is a link to pictures of my guerciotti. The pictures are my bike when i bought it. i recently did a total overhaul on it. I built it up with 2006 10 speed centaur drivetrain, ambrosio w/ campy record hub, brooks imperial saddle, Nitto Technomic stem, going to buy a new VO rando bar too.
When i pulled the bottom bracket i found rifling in the tubes coming out of the bottom bracket shell. This confirmed my suspicions that its columbus SLX.
