ORPHAN Wheel Exchange???

I don't know about the rest of you, but I tend to find good wheels, but not always as a set. For instance, I have three Ultegra hub front wheels, and one Ultegra rear, and guess what, none of them match, not even close. I would really like to make a matching set to put on my new Paramount S5.

So I wondered how many others have a similar problem, and maybe there is an opportunity to mix and match some of our orphans to make complete sets?

I'll probably post something in the WTT area.

Yeah, we should post the specs, like this:

Rear Ultegra 6500 9s freehub laced 3x (w/ double butted spokes) to 700c Mavic(?) hard anodized graphite color rim.

Chris_in_Miami 10-01-10 08:54 AM

Brilliant idea! I've got a few wheels I'd like to match up or trade away...

4Rings6Stars 10-01-10 09:09 AM

Me too...

Superbe Pro rear laced to Mavic GP4 tubular that is a very nice wheel that I will NEVER use.

khatfull 10-01-10 09:35 AM

I'd like to know where this "wheel tree" is or what you guys do to get visits from the wheel fairy. Wheels just never "appear" for me.

What's the secret!?!? :)

noglider 10-01-10 09:40 AM

Of course, rear wheels get trashed long before fronts do, so I have a surplus of front hubs. I'd expect this to be true for nearly everyone else. On the other hand, if you have an extra rear hub, I'd probably be willing to trade you TWO front hubs! Same for wheels.

Garage sales. I have found more good wheels at garage sales, than anywhere else. Anything from Shimano 105 hub on up. My best flip ever was a set of Zipp carbon wheels, complete with tubular tires, skewers, cassette. Also got a set of Mavic Cosmic Elites at the same garage sale (with tires and tubes). The typical garage sale wheels are either left overs from when the owner upgraded, or a single wheel left over from a crash.

Found four wheels at the Goodwill Clearance center last week, two matching sets (but MTB wheels unfortunately). They sell stuff there $1.10 a pound. So I could not pass them up. One set Shimano STX with Mavic rims, the other set Shimano Parallax with Weinmann rims. Both with SS spokes. One will go on that Univega Alpina Pro I just picked up. One wheel was missing the QR.

Bought a Shimano 600 wheelset at a garage sale two weeks ago, complete with cassette, tires, and tubes.

The wheel I am trying to match right now is a Ultegra 6500 hub, unknown rim (I think it is Mavic). Not home right now, or I would take a closer look. One of the fronts I have has a Shimano Ultegra 6600 hub, with Mavic Open Pro rim (black). I also have a low spoke Shimano WH 6700 front (I think). Thinking about buying a black Mavic rim and relacing the 6500 rear hub. The 6600 hub doesn't match the 6600 for sure, so I am not jumping on that option.

It's not just wheels, I've got half a pair of pedals, one handgrip and a lonely brake lever. Then we can talk about my daughters' shoe box.

If anyone finds a lonely Mavic Open 4 CD/shimano 6400 front wheel and needs a roval aero front wheel I'm yer man!

I might have one of those, Rudi. I'll need to check the wheel closet. That 27" Weinmann concave would make a matching set for my Viscount.

This is a great thread and thought about doing the same for awhile. I have tons of miss matched wheels although nothing very high end I do have some nice vintage mid end wheels that I could use the mate to or would be good to get someone else a set of rollers going. As Bill stated I do get a lot of fronts also but I do have some good rears with no match. I will start going through some of them and see what I have, wheels around here are like rabbits put one down and and by the next day there will be three of them there.

I have a left (s) campy strada pedal, black cage.

That would be funny, since you probably know what rim I'm trying to match here. Urgency on this is practically nil.

ColonelJLloyd 10-05-10 08:25 AM

Looking for a 27" Wolber model 58, 36h wheel or just the rim.

I suppose I should have thought before I sent you that rear wheel!

Cool! Bonus points if it's 32H, though a garden variety 36H would be fine too.

36h, iirc.

rat fink 10-05-10 10:07 AM

I also have a single 32h Mavic GL 330 and a 27" 36h Mavic Module E clincher. They are both unlaced. The GL 330 looks like it's never been used before.

Sunshine Pro-Am hub on unknown black tubular rim. Just lubed up the bearings and it spins for a very long time. Comes with older tire. Looking for a front tubular with a silver rim to match the front in this picture. Brand doesn't matter.
