Advice needed on component choice for classic De Rosa Neo Primato

Hey guys, I have the chance of getting a lovely NOS classic De Rosa Neo Primato frame. It's a 1996 model and stunning. The guy is ready to part with it for 550 USD. That's a quite reasonable price, right? Now there is the question which components are a suitable fit. I already have a set of very nice MAVIC Rims on Campagnolo hubs and a lovely Cinelli champione del mondo stem and bar, so I guess it is going to be an all Italian ride... What do you guys think of the Campa Athena component group? Thanks very much for your opinions... Cheers

I also quite like croce d'aune and the late victory. Very different regarding prices... If anyone has parts of these left, please pm me. Cheers

I think you'd be happier with modern 10 or 11 speed groups on it, Campagnolo, of course.

Nice! I'd build it with a modern Campagnolo alu group.

Period correct would be Campy 8 speed Ergo. 9 speed came out in 1997. With a frame like this I would hunt for Chorus level or above. I'm a great fan of 8 sp Campagnolo, currently having almost 3 complete groups in the works. The 'alloy' look is easy to achieve, as there were no carbon or black parts available to muddle up the market. Also the levers have a clean appearance and shifts very deliberate, so to speak. You can drop half a cassette with one push and the front is ratcheting. Good stuff.

For the popular neo-retro look and performance choose 10 or 11 speed Campy, again higher level component groups. The price with mid-level wheels will be close to a grand.

To me it would make little sense to employ groups that predates the frame, as C d'A or C-Record.

I have now been able to get my hands on a complete Chorus 8 speed (synchro) group, at reasonable money. It does predate the frame a little bit but Im still happy. What Im still missing is the AERO brake levers w/o ergo shifters. Does anyone still have em and wants to part with them?
Reckon I'll go for a similar look/ set- up, but with regular black Mavic rims and a black seat. Still looking for the Cinelli SLX saddle

+1...Jan has this down with everything he said.

8 speed Ergo is incredible...I have two bikes with 8sp ergo and they're just worry free, wonderful, riding pleasure. It is definitely a highly functional, beautiful choice and if it were me, I'd wait a little longer to build, but I'd do it right. The 8sp ergo stuff also isn't that insanely expensive...it will be, so act quickly.

I also strongly agree with OFG and Jan about 11sp Campy...the stuff is worth every dollar in performance. My next bike will be an 11sp campy bike.

Sell the chorus and get 8speed. Why would you want to get an OLDER group for a frame like this when the appropriate group is so much better??? Put the stuff on that belongs on it or build it up modern is my motto.

It seems you are all supporting the 8speed Ergo choice. I have no experience whatsoever with it but am willing to try- you have got me. I'll start sourcing

Do you have any larger photos of that blue De Rosa with the Shamals?

I am putting a 10 speed Record group on my De Rosa Professional, mostly because I had a nice set of Record/Open Pro wheels lying around, not being used. The bike handles incredibly well, I cannot wait to take it out with Ergo shifting.

My 9-speed racing triple right brifter died so I set up my Break-Away with old 8 speed brifters and an old rear 8 speed Shamal wheel. (weird old 14-30 Record OR cassette). Amazed at how well this works.
