Raleigh Sports fork question

I have a 72' Sports that has a slight problem. The fork as you can see from the picture has the piece (i dont know what its called, it connects the wheel to the fork) that is loose and I can pull it out from the rest of the fork. This in turn causes the wheel to lean into the fork and rub the tire... I never noticed because of where the fender connects to the fork, it pretty much held it in place but im sure as sh*t not going to ride it like that now that i know..
Is there any product I can put in there to glue it in place that will hold up to the stress? I thought about JB weld, but I figured someone on here would be able to help me out...I went to my LBS and they said they could measure and order a new fork (not a Raleigh fork) and install it for $60-$100 and I have had zero luck looking online for a replacement... thanks to all |
Non Raleigh 26" forks are available on Ebay for cheap. You'll need a matching headset, though cause Raleigh uses 26tpi threading while the rest of the world uses 24tpi.
What size frame is this for and how long is the steerer tube? |
I have a Sports Fork that I have no use for. Measure your headtube and I'll make sure the steerer on mine is long enough. PM me for details

A Raleigh fork seldom needs to be replaced. One needs a new headset for a 24 TPI fork if one cannot locate a 26 TPI one.
Its rarely an issue. |
If you want to go the replacement, try ebay for genuine Raleigh forks, or bikepartsusa or what not for chromed threaded forks.
You can always JB weld it - it's just hi-tensile steel. |

hey Jmichael, I have to have 50 posts to PM. not sure how precise the measurement has to be but inside the chrome is 4"11/16 and from the bottom of the stem to the top of the fork is 6" hope this helps and thanks all for your help. I have been looking on ebay and haven't found a fork yet.

I've JB-welded a high-compression V8 head back together...you're telling me that the fork on a Raleigh sports is going to take more power than that? Doubtful.

Maybe I've been mixing it wrong, but I've never been impressed with JB Weld (or Marine-Tex,) I wouldn't trust it in that application. Besides, isn't this his girlfriend's bike? :innocent:

JB Weld is great stuff but these forks are pretty common. be patient, one will come along.

Im pretty set on just getting another fork, but i went the JB route just to see what would happen. It looks terrible......ha but i am just curious if it will hold up. Gonna let it cure for a while..

I've been a Professional Auto Technician for close to 35 years, I have used JB weld on lots of things. I can tell you the drop out is not going to hold, it can never have the holding power a brazed joint has. BTW, the reason it fell out is, cause the brazing job was cold, or dirty. Have it rebrazed, paint it and you'll be done with it.
I have fixed transmission cases that were seeping fluid due to case porsity. Mike |
