BB oddity?

I picked up an early 70's Kessels Molteni Merckx and it has a 70mm wide (Italian?) BB shell but has English cups!?

Not faced? Weird Belgian conspiracy? It also has a flat filed on the steerer (French?) instead of a keyway, but it takes a BSC headset!?

Any idea why?

Thanks

Can't tell you about the BB (except it can be faced down to 68 if you're so inclined) but the flat filed steerer is not strictly a FR thing (only more common there). There were British builders who favored that over a keyway as it is (or believed to be) less likely to cause a steerer to split.
Come to think of it: I have a Ciocc that has a flat-back steerer, so some Italians favored it too.

Fuji's from the late 70's early 80's timeframe also sometimes used 70mm BSC BB's.
