Help identifying my Motobecane.

10 Attachment(s)
I have recently bought a motobecane 10 speed racer and i would like to know what model it is.
It is Reynolds 531 three tube frame.
Stronglight 49D chainset.
Shimano dura ace brake levers.
Shimano 600 brakes.
Huret ( challenger? ) drivetrain.
Pivo stem and faux leather handlebar grips.
Lightrace headset.

Any help[ would be appreciated, thanks!

I originally wanted to buy a motobecane frame and a guy selling one came to deliver a frame for me but he had this one in the back of his van and so i bought this instead. I paid 40 Euros for the whole bike less wheels.
The bike is in great condition but needs a serious clean.
I have already added new cables and housings for the brakes and tuned everything up.
It rides great but i'm waiting for a stronglight crank puller so that i can grease the bottom bearings. I have greased the headset bearings already.
It brakes very well and shifts nice and smooth.
I think it will be a great bike after some elbow grease!

Here are some photos

Your pics did not come through - - I suspect the Huret/Pivo/Stronglight items are original. Sounds quite interesting.

Best match would be a 1976-1977 Grand Record. The decals place it late 1970s. The tretubi frame with the TI version of the decal, in conjunction with the Challenger rear derailleur, would narrow it to 1976-1977. The tretubi frame is also indicative of a Grand Record or Grand Touring but the relatively narrow gearing is more ytpical of the former. I suspect the brakes are an upgrade.

According to the '76 catalog on Velobase, the Grand Record only came in black or silver that year. Velobase doesn't have the '77 catalog. In '76 the Grand Touring did come in "champagne". It's not shown spec'd with a 49d crankset, but that could easily have been switched.

On the Velobase 1978 catalogue the spec looks the same as the TR3 but that bike is in Silver and doesn't have braze ons on the top tube.

Are you in the States? That 1978 catalog is French, obviously, and many of those models weren't sold in the US, at least as far as I know.

I'm in Paris France and so it's a french spec bike i think.

In that case, my knowledge base only allows me to offer that it's a very nice bike and you got a great deal.

Yes, and they're quite nice. There was also a titanium version of the rear derailleur called "Success."

Thanks.
I am in the process of stripping them down fully to thoroughly clean them because they are filthy.
I have already finished and reassembled the front derailleur and it looks great , It did take about 2 hours though!
The Rear derailleur is still in about 20 pieces and about 50% clean now.
I really like the derailleurs.
Here are some before and after photos

It's going to be a really nice bike when you're through Daveyates.
+1 to the Challenger DR - they function very well.

Nice bike & equipment. Looks like things are in good condition except for accummulation of grime over the years. Hope the BB and headset are still in good shape!

Daveyates 10-27-10 02:53 AM

Thanks guys,
I'm nearly finished with it and have all of the gears and levers cleaned now.
As for the headset i dismantled it and cleaned and regreased it and it is nice and smooth.
The BB really needs a good clean and re grease and that's the next job.
I'll add some more photos when i'm finished.

Oh and from the advice here and similar bikes i have seen online i'm going for the grand record identity for this bike.
