Sturmey Archer workshop
I have no affiliation with this, just thought it was cool and wanted to pass it along.

Thats pretty cool. Would be fun to see some of the units he brings in for display if that pic on CL is any indication.
|
Thanks for posting this. I might be able to do this (though I guess I'd rather go for a ride).
|
If you go, ask him to bring the show to D.C.
|
I have to work, but if I didn't I would be going to this. I have a seized (or just REALLY TIGHT) 57 SW hub I'd like to redo.
|
I need to redo the K series unit in the Golden Arrow. I really should go to this.
|
I'm not a grand expert on Sturmey Archer, but I could do a class on rebuilding an AW hub. Do you think I could/should do that here in Nawthin Joizy?
|
i would love to have someone teach me how to do this, its one thing looking on the internets but to have someone show me would be awesome.
|
You're welcome to stay for a while. We're hosting our first guest from couchsurfing.org next month. We love visitors, especially those who share our interests.
Other than that, there's an English fellow who has posted some excellent videos on the breakdown of the AW hub. |

http://www.youtube.com/user/GrahamNR17 I used his videos to get my Columbia's hub apart, but it ended up just needing a spritz of PB Blaster to get things moving again. |
I looked for PB Blaster at Home Despot yesterday. I haven't tried it yet. I really must.
Yes, Graham is the guy, and this is the video I was referring to. I love his accent. And his workshop must be cold to need those gloves. |
Tom,
I have used PB Blaster for about a year now and it works really well. Does a wonderful job in loosening up stuck stems and seat posts, etc. Although right now it has not done the job on some seized alloy Stronglight cotterless crank dust caps that are preventing me from removing a crank. Other than that, it smells pretty horrible. |
Good to hear.
Try drilling two holes in the dust cap and using a pin wrench to remove it. |
ftwelder, what's the trouble with your hub? And is the K compatible with the AW?
|
PB blaster works GREAT, but if your "shop" is in the basement, your whole house will stink like PB Blaster. Best used outside
|
Basically there's two types of penetrating oils:
PB Blaster Stuff that doesn't work as well as PB Blaster I used to restore cars and we went through cans on it because it's nearly as good as a torch for loosening bolts without the danger of catching (probably irreplaceable) things on fire. |
