You will be as envious of my daughter as I am!

My daughter has shop classes in her curriculum in college. She has learned to use an acetylene torch and can already silver-solder.

She is considering a course they have there for building bicycle frames. When she is done, she will have a frame of her own that she will have built.

I don't even know how to use a torch.

She goes to Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA.

Here is her new bracelet. Looks like a pretty clean joint in the middle.

That is a nice fusion right there. Keep us updated on how the bike frame is going to shape up. Where might I ask is she taking these classes? You guys are from my old neck of the woods.

Wow, that is too damned cool! Are you going to commission a custom, vintage frame from her?

The bracelet is beautiful - +1 on the joint. Immaculate...

Olympia is only a couple hours from me up here on Whidbey - maybe she can build one for me

Which method was used to join that bracelet?

Shop class... that sounds like a lot more fun now than it would have to a younger me.

You let your daughter go to Evergreen ?

I kid, I have good friends that went there. Its um, unconventional.

What do you mean she is "CONSIDERING" taking a course. By the looks of that bracelet it would be a shame if she didn't. Beautiful work.

That is beautiful. The joint is perfect.

Is that brass and copper?

Mail her a box of lugs.....never know what you might get back.

Although with the quality of that joint perhaps you should have a talk with her about fillet brazing.

And is it Bicycle Classics that has some Reynolds 531 tube sets? Bracelet looks quite nice!

Among other Evergreen State alumni are acclaimed cartoonist/author Lynda Barry and her cartooning buddy Matt Groening, known for his amusing drawings of rabbits, also some foolishness on the television.

Her course this year is called History of Art and Religion, and it includes craft. Lots of it. She spends hours a day in the studios. There was a section on the history of the bicycle, and she discovered she knew all of that material already.

I don't know why she is merely considering taking the frame building course. She is excited about the prospect. But she hasn't decided yet, for whatever reason.

I don't know if the bracelet is brass and copper. Looks like it. I'll ask.

well, it IS a very nice bit of soldering by a beginner, but do warn her about joining dissimilar metals: you might start getting gas music transmissions from Jupiter!
Speaking as somebody who grew up around jewelry work (both parents) for me the skill to solder jewelry was much easier to master than brazing or welding...much...but don't let that discourage your daughter: she might be a natural, and look at the Schwinn Paramount Works...top-notch women brazers!
