which cone wrench should I get
 

Up until now I've been getting by with my regular combo wrenches, but I'm beginning to think I need a proper cone wrench, or set of cone wrenches. Given that Santa will need to save some dough to pay the elves shortly, what would give me the most bang for the buck in the meanwhile? My bikes are primarily 70's 10-12 speed and Japanese.

13/14 on same wrench is pretty standard; 13 for front, 14 for rear.

These are incredibly good for the price. I like mine so much that I'm going to buy more of their tools. The $50 headset press is next.

Thanks, If Park makes a 13/14 combo I should probably get that, I can use my regular combo wrenches for the outside nuts. I'm sure I'll end up buying more, but I don't want to buy junk.

*edit* Grand Bois, I didn't see your post until after posting. Have you used the Sette Torkx 7 piece set then with good results? That really isn't very much.

I like the long handled ones by Park Tools. Ninety percent of my wrenching is on vintage bikes.

+1 On the Sette wrenches. They put them on sale a couple of years ago for $1.99 each, I bought an ample supply of all sizes.

I have two of the park wrenches and like them a lot. I have also picked up some cheap wrenches to carry in bags. Both have their purposes.

I have the cheaper Park wreches and they are fine... You might also want to get a 32mm for your head sets.

If you're buying a set, that's great. If you're buying one wrench, you need a 13/15. A 13/14 is nice to have, but while 14mm cones do exist, they are not common. Let's put it another way, I've only seen two bikes that had 14 mm cones (drove me nuts!). By far the more common cones are 13 front /15 rear. If you want to cover yourself, get both.

GB beat me to it - buy this set. But, I beat him on the headset press - I have had mine for a year or two now, and it is pretty slick. I recommend that, too.

Damn. Wish I had known about this before I got the cheap Park 13/15. Oh well, I probably won't need more than that anyway and the bit of extra money went to support my favorite LBS.

The cone wrenches look very similar to some spin doctor ones I got a few years ago. Thanks for the link to the site, as I could use some singles!

I've got three of the cheaper Park tools wrenches and they all get used, great value for the money I think.

I have some of these from Cyclepro and they work pretty well, I like the offset...

N+1 on the Sette wrenches. Thanks to whoever originally 'outed' them, they're great wrenches for the price (or any price really....)
