Immediately after the crash, I thought about this too ... then I realized that for that to help, I would have also needed break-away front forks!

Give your body a day, then if anything really hurts, go see a doc just in case.
Some bits have not required a day to notify me of their condition. Right elbow. Left shin. SOOOOOOOOOOOOO lucky it wasn't my head, as I am stoopid helmet eschewer.

Well, there has been recent discussion about the Viscount death fork. The circumstances would have been different but the result would probably have been the same .

Glad to hear your noodle is still al dente.

Still? After my crash, helmet is mandatory, since I saw what happened to the helmet.

If the right elbow and left shin are gaining in pain, not lessening, and it's been a few hours, go in. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for all the sympathy.

Reconsidering the long wheelbase recumbent. An old Easy Racer would be C&V aplenty.

Debris in the roadway really pisses me off, especially when it's broken beer bottles. What happened to you, you'd probably take a flat or two rather than grab an aerial over the handlebars.

Aw, you can straighten that fender and use it until a suitable replacement turns up... won't ever be perfect, which is a bonus: whenever anyone asks what happened to it, you can tell them!

I had a very similar crash a few years ago; same stick, by the look of it (I tossed it into the woods afterwards, so anything's possible). And my fender was even more trashed (plastic one, shattered, shoodoobie). Ripped the knee out of a perfectly good pair of chinos, too.

I instinctively braked for an idiot squirrel that ran across my path yesterday. A moment later I thought, WTH, it was only a damned squirrel! Having read this thread, I realize maybe it was a good thing for my own sake that I braked.
Interesting and very freakish failure mode for a fender. Low occurence, high severity.
Good stories and glad to hear the recoveries went/go well. For my header story, see the thread "stupidest thing you did on a bike".

I say "yes" to the SKS w/ breakaway stays. They have saved me more than once when something gets picked up by the wheel. I even add them to the rear fender. Rivendell sells just the break away mounts since they usually come for the front fender only.

I'm sorry if this is not a short answer. We have a significant beaver population here in the NH mountains. They are nearly as easy to find as wild turkeys (although they are in hiding at the moment).

About 6 years ago, while I was away for 3 weeks, a family decided to invade my yard and proceeded to dam-up the small creek flowing through my yard. When I discovered their handy work, in my naive ignorance, I was thrilled! I could stand quietly on the top of the dam and they would swim right to my feet, place a stick, add mud and grass, and pack it in. They could not have been closer, and this is how I know they stink.

However, beavers do not know how to stop adding to the height of their dams. Their quaint little pond, which was initially 25-30 feet in diameter, kept growing! Soon their rodent engineering was successfully flooding my driveway, the neighbor's yard, and the road in front of our houses!

Everyday I had to spend an hour or so ripping a hole in the dam (instead of riding a bike), in order to release water to keep the pond a manageable size. Each night they would patch and repair the hole. I finally outwitted them when I installed a drain pipe which kept the pond at a constant level--- but when we had severe rains or the snow melt the little drain could not handle the additional flow and we had the problem all over again. Eventually the town sent in a trapper and we tore significant holes in the dam.

Now, if young beavers get busy on my property, I do everything possible to scare them away! I'm known as the "Anti-Beaver" pastor around town.

Mine bought three months ago have breakaways for both front and rear.

This is why I switched my bikes over to SKS from PB. I assumed (incorrectly) that old school metal fenders wouldn't have this problem, I thought they'd snap a stick, guess not....

Which model? I have purchased 3 sets in the last 6 months (2 P45 & 1 Blumel model sets) and all only came with one for the front! I wonder if I got "old stock"?
