Regal Girardi Problem...Solution...Opinions...

1 Attachment(s)
Hey...I got the red Regal Girardi in the mail today...it is NOS and gorgeous. I was in my LBS shootin' the **** with the guys and one of them informs me that hardly any seatposts will work with the mag rails AND he used to see them come in with broken rails all the time in the late 80's...way to kill my buzz.

Anyway...I got home and checked the saddle out in relation to the Mavic 330 seatpost and it turns out that this seatpost is pretty much ideal for the wide mag rails EXCEPT FOR ONE THING. The lower cradle for the Mavic has (2) vertical posts which quickly locate the top cradle...however, they are in the way of the wider rail's sides.

I can either:
a) cut/machine these posts off.
b) machine an entire new lower cradle from billet
c) not use the saddle or get another post that works better with the saddle.

Keep in mind I scored the post for $35, but I also have other saddles at my disposal of course (rode it today with a black Arione).

Here's a pic of the lower cradle.

Thoughts???

I wouldn't irreversibly change the Mavic post as they are just as hard to come by as the saddle. Just try and find another seatpost that will work without any modifications.

Italian saddle on a French post? That's the problem.

As I mentioned in your original thread, the saddles came with a longer bolt for the Campy SR seat post. Use it as it was intended.

The saddle was in its original box...but...no bolt with it. I don't own a Campy SR seat post...are you saying that's the only post to use? It's not a matter of a longer bolt with this post, it's a matter of the vertical pegs interfering with the side ribs of the odd shaped rails. I can easily procure a longer bolt of course.

The pegs aren't necessary from a functional/safety standpoint even with a different saddle later on FWIW...

No, I'm saying that was the post it was designed to be used with. All of my bikes have Campy seat posts, except for an SR on my dirt road bike, so I can't advise you if it will work on any other seat post, or even a two bolt Campy seat post.

All I'm saying is it will work with what it was designed for.

What period Campy SR post am I looking for...the non-aero, semi fluted at the top kind?

TIA

That would be the period correct seat post, and the one that a longer bolt was supplied for. Like this, on my wife's bike:

This is a mag railed saddle, like yours, but in black.

Hey OFG...Does she have many miles on it? Any issues??

I have a line on a SR I think.

While looking at pics of Campy posts of that vintage (and into the aero posts) the top single bolt clamps all seem to look the same...is there something that sets the SR post apart from the others in terms of compatibility with the mag rails???

She has one and I have one and a good friend who no longer posts here has one, no issues. Hers has few miles on it, it was NOS in the picture. Mine and my friends have lots of miles without issue. Maybe the alleged failure was due to excessive tightening of the tension screw, or over zealous clamping. I wouldn't worry.

The aero and smooth version that has Campagnolo down the side use a 6mm allen bolt instead of the 13mm bolt. Though I haven't put one on that style seat post, I can't see where there would be an issue, other than bolt length.

Thanx for the info...hopefully I can grab one for a reasonable price...shame on the Mavic post though...very nice looking piece! I guess the Mavic will remain a holder for the Arione when I feel like going "light"...

So...I tried the Athena aero post off my Reus and it does work as well.

Unfortunately the SR post fell through...so, I'm on the lookout for a reasonably priced aero post now.
