Wow, my ears ARE burning! Took me a while to get to email today, but it looks like you guys generated a lively conversation without me! I do have transportation and am certainly willing to travel an hour or so to meet up with you generous folks. As Doc indicated, I'm going to need a fair amount of help putting this thing together...but I would trade beer, lemonade, or food for an afternoon of help. :) I don't have the parts yet, so I think it'd be at least a week or two before this would happen. Neal or Scott (or someone else), might we work out a time around then? I work an erratic schedule that includes most Saturdays, but I have days during the week and most Sundays free. MA is sort of the same way. The center of their universe is Boston. :rolleyes: Even though I'm only a measly 100 miles north of Logan airport, this part of NH is considered frontier wilderness. Even Worchester (pronounced "Wuss-tur" :eek:) is considered western MA, even though it is only 43 miles from Boston. This is because anything west of Boston outside of I-95 is "western MA!" :twitchy: Rachel is north of Springfield, MA, which most of us would call "central MA." She's about 100 miles from Neal, and 125 from Scott. And from Kingston, she is about 130 miles. So at 70 miles to ftwelder, and 120 miles to me, you begin to see how geography+culture affects our perceptions of distances. ;) Grrrrrr. :notamused: :) |

Neal, if you're going to be in Holyoke in the next couple weeks, that'd be perfect. A potential limitation is that I don't have any workspace in my tiny attic apartment--most of the work would have to be done outside in our ample driveway, which could get mighty cold, depending on what winter feels like doing. I also don't have one of those fancy bike repair stands, but maybe I could rig something up.
I work Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, but any other day of the week would work for me. How about I email you (what's your email?) when I receive the parts in the mail? At that point, if you're still up to it--and no pressure if you're not--we can work out a time to meet up. I live right off highway 91, which you probably know is close to Holyoke but not too too convenient off the Mass Pike. Thanks, Rachel |

Tom, I'm a pointy-headed academic, so in addition to teaching, I research and write for a remarkably small audience. I've been working on a project about a guy who was the Superintendent of Schools in Holyoke, MA, in the 1890s, and a bunch of city archival materials are housed at the community college there.

Here's the contents of the care package being shipped out today: Avocet saddle, DiaCompe brake levers & brake calipers with spare set of new shoes, Alpha 3000 front derailleur with 31.8 clamp & Alpha 3000 rear derailleur, Suntour 6 speed wide range freewheel, Alpha 3000 indexing shift levers, new Shimano 6 speed chain, new brake cables and new blue cable housing (I’ve pre-cut the housing to an approximate length), new derailleur cables, a 126mm Suntour asymmetrical bottom bracket with new sealed bearings (this is actually a pretty cool BB, it has TWO adjustable cups and can be moved a couple MM from side to side to get optimum chain spacing), a pair of new 27" inner tubes, ferrules for the cable housing ends and tips for the cable ends. The short piece of cable housing runs from the bottom of the chainstay back to the RD (yes, brake cable housing is the correct size for this). Assuming nothing is terribly out of whack with the frame, the only thing remaining is a pair of 27" tires, which I do not have on hand. So if anyone can help out with that, we should be good. Let's get this lady on the road! Whoever winds up helping out, note that the BB is slightly oddball (kind of a Phil Woods copy by Suntour) BB and unless you know old Cannondales the cable housing thing would be confusing. The Suntour freewheel takes an unusual removal tool, but unless you need to remove the old one that should not pose a problem since it will just screw onto the wheel. All she needs now is a pair of 27" tires and some bar wrap. And the assistance of a knowledgable C&V'er. |

Nope, it uses your basic twin hooker spring-O type tool, with a conventional lockring. Left hand threads on the drive side, right hand threads on the non-drive side. Pretty cool BB and very smooth, just too wide for anything other than one of those older cranksets. You may find that the original BB is fine and just needs cleaning and some fresh grease, but sent this along just in case. |
I can donate a pair of 27" tires. I'm certain I have some Panaracer Tourgaurds with plenty of life left in them. What color is the bike? I might have some wrap.

If you guys are running into trouble with tools/parts I can probably help. I went to UMASS Amherst, and I'd probably still be able to use their bike Co-Op stuff with out much hassle. In fact, it might just be quicker if you brought the bike to them and asked for a bit of help; you just need to get there before finals start. If you're interested, PM me.

I continue to be baffled by the generosity of the folks on this site. I'm currently waiting for the package Doc sent; after that, I'll assess (probably with help) what else might be needed. I *think* the wheels I have are okay, but I might be wrong--and then I will need tires, and pastorbob, if you have some, I'd love to have them! Thanks.
