Scratch-X at work on Raleigh Superbe

Before and after comparisons of the Meguiars product (KIT's Scratch Out, for the record, is equally effective) on nine14six's new acquisition, a 1968 Raleigh Superbe:

Okay, I've got to pick up some Scratch-X to use on my '74 Raleigh Grand Prix. The paint is pretty good over most of it but it does have some places where the paint is bubbling a little and little scratches here and there that keep it from really shining. Thanks for posting this.

Scratch X won't remove rust, but if you have dulled paint, it should help dramatically.

Does anyone know how this stuff works? Does it fill in paint scratches? Why would it be any different than wax? I am not trying to be funny. The looks appear pretty good. I just wondered how it actually does its job.

I don't want it to remove the rust, I just want it to bring back the luster to the paint around the spot where I remove the rust.

I think it's just a well-formulated (and well-marketed) polishing compound, it removes a microscopic layer of oxidized paint and levels the surface. There are plenty of similar products, some are labeled as "paint cleaner" which sounds like it will take less effort than "polishing compound." All of the versions that I've used work pretty well.

Kurt, is that the Superbe that was advertised as "all-original" on CL earlier this week? Looks like a beauty!

Yes, like Chris said it removes a small amount of paint. If you use a white cloth it will pick up the frame color.

I'll guess; 10 minutes or less.

It doesn't take long. Scratch X is great stuff.

My Fuji America's frame was "revived" with ScratchX after I finally decided to try some after reading all of Kurt's posts. While my paint was in better shape the results were no less extraordinary. I'm a big believer.

It removes oxidation and grime off the original paint. A very, VERY fine liquid abrasive; so fine that I can rub over the Superbe decals. Not hard, of course, but I'm not worried about them polishing off (there are, however, some decals that will come off immidiately w/Scratch X).

I just bought some scratch-x the other day after seeing it in another thread somewhere. May have to give it a try on the SuperCourse tonight.

I am going to pick some of this up. The liquid compound I have is too fine and I think this would do the trick. Keith, I think you have reached the limit of how nice a bike can look.

Hardly enough to consider earthshattering, unless one's color coat is thinner than 1/10th the thickness of a conventional piece of paper.

Yeah, this stuff is the bomb. This afternoon I picked up a jug of Maguiers Dent-X. Can't wait to try that out.

It was right next to the Maguiers Drew-x on the shelf but I don't really need any of that at the moment.

The first thing I do after stripping a bike down for rebuilding and selling is to rub it out with Scratch-X. It doesn't take long to do, and the results help sell the bike.

Don't knock it. I've often found great bikes out of the Trash-X.

I have some Mother's scratch remover and I thought it helped immensely on the Shogun. Is there any advantage to the Meguire's over other products?

I don't think so. Most care care lines have their own version. I've used a few with the same good results.

Actually, you can mix Maguiers Dent-X with Maguiers Drew-x and a bit of Scratch-X. Once this mixture is applied, allowed to dry and buffed out, the results can, and often do, prove to be stunning. In all honesty, though, the task is a demanding one, sometimes taking up to an hour just to get results like this...

Look at how this slightly damaged Montini responded to the application. Just rub it on, leave it overnight and voila, Fi-Xed bicycle:-)

I live close by Kurt and have seen these results first hand. I recently acquired a 1978 Raleigh Cometition GS frame off ebay. The paint is in nice shape, but a bit faded. So, following Kurts advice I used Scratch X on the silver paint and even the Chrome stays. The results were fantastic, leaving only the bigger scratches behind. Once all the oxidized paint is removed a good coat of wax should be applied.
