info wanted on old Dürkopp shaft-drive bike
I'm seeking more information about this wonderful bicycle that my family owns.
It is a shaft-driven Dürkopp, and it is in excellent original, unrestored condition.
It rides well, has the original leather toolkit, tire pump, all the tools, the original leather saddle, and all of the decorations and paint on the bicyle are original. Only the rubber tires are new.
Does anyone have an idea about the approximate retail value of this bicycle for insurance purposes? Thanks!

Copake Auctions does a bicycle auction every year (or so?) where they had a Durkopp a few years ago. Whether that one is close enough to yours to give you any sense of its value, I can't guess; but you should be able to get their old catalogs (online perhaps) and prices realized, which will give you a sense of what old bicycles are worth.
Durkopp made very high quality bikes, and yours is in exceptional condition. I can only guess at its value, and would rather not; its value to a collector would depend on how bad the collector wanted it. It would be as good as impossible to replace, were it stolen or destroyed or something.

the gears
It's a single speed or "fixie" as my son would call them, and seems set pretty high for cruising. The original owner put on a number of highway miles, and I remember being allowed to ride this bike a few times as a teenager.

A very cool rare bike.
I know nothing about the history of shaft drive bicycles but I assume there are good technical reasons why shaft drive did not prevail as a concept for bicycle drivetrains. Obvious ones to me are:
1. less efficient than chain
2. gear noise, perhaps?
3. wear on gears more severe and more expensive to fix versus chain?
4. variable ratios difficult to implement without huge increase in complexity and mass
