Purchase or not - Gitane Super Course Frame
I have a lead on a Gitane SC of the 70's, fame and fork only. The condition is really poor. The rear DS drop (Campagnolo - hence the SC identification) out was replaced so the chrome is gone and the brake cable bridge, not the caliper bridge, is gone. The price is $100. Too much? If so what would it be worth?

Too much. You can pick up off brand, but equal of better quality frames in good condition on Ebay for about that much.
|
WAAY too much for condition described.
edit Damaged and repaired 70s frame with possible other problems - I'd pay ... Nothing. OK maybe $25 if there is something good to say about it and you really want a French bike. If that represents fair asking prices in Portland area, you guys are out of line - even w/ Seattle. JMHO |
It will be a nice riding frame, but you'll never be able to return it to its original appearance without way overspending. FYI: not all Gitanes had the brake cable stop. Then it's worth the fork value, less selling cost.

Thanks for the feedback. I did a search to determine which model it might be. The SC is based on pics and descriptions of SC only having Campagnolo DO. Has the replacement been done right? Not 100% sure. I would not be interested in restoration, just a quick clean up recognizing the chrome is not salvagable. I was looking for a low cost frame to hang all my equipment from my wrecked Le Champion. You know, french BB and head set etc.
I was not impressed with the seat stay's either. They look really fat at the seat lug and far apart. Seeing the nubs left from the cable bridge was a disappointment as well. I'll wait. I did get a NOS vittoria Pro 280 tubular for $5! |
BTW. It is Super Corsa

thnx!

My Gitane Tour de France is my most beat up bike. The paint and decals are seriously scraped up and the chrome is in bad shape. It's still my favorite bike because it rides better than any bike I've ever ridden. There's something special about seventies high end Gitanes and I'm not the only one that says so. You may find a better looking frame for $100, but I doubt that you'll find a better riding frame at that price.
