Found this by the curb with a sign that said free. Who am I to turn down a bike needing a home. As near as I can tell it is a U08 1974 Vintage. It doesn't appear to have been ridden much, and even had the aluminum pump. The saddle is a little dry, but after some conditioner it seems to be OK. Cleaned it up a little and rode about twenty miles the first evening.

The best part is that as a young 2LT stationed in Germany in the early 80's these were sold in the PX and I lusted after one, but never seemed to have the spare cash.

Yaay. I'm having a far-too-expensive fixed gear conversion done to a nearly identical Peugeot of the same era. Mine's orange though. Does yours have the dimpled steel rims?

Wow, great story to the bike (about the wanting one and now you come across it for free). Great conversation breaker for those cafe rides.

Yeah. I like the swooshing kind of noise they make when you hit the brakes.

I've thought about going fixed gear but this is too nice, so I think I'll keep looking for something to convert.

I can't believe your good luck. I ride a '68 U08 regularly and love it. (Had the bike 30 some years) Looked at every single one of the 8,530 bikes in Hotter N Hell Hudred this summer and saw not one Peugeot U08 or PX10.

Have one roughly the same vintage and color, converted to a fixie at the cost of a track cog (sorry, ajkloss, the rest of the parts were just lying around in my basement and needed to be put on a bike) that I love as an all-purpose beater bike. What a fine thing it is. Great find, have fun. You might replace the steel rims (better braking from alloy rims) and the cottered crank (less troublesome to overhaul) at some point; I did on mine and don't regret it in the least. Great, stable ride.

Yes, do what poguemahone said, also put in some aero brake levers. If you do, you will have a very nice, albeit somewhat heavy, ride. The bike will be practically bomb proof.

Me neither. I did line up next to a guy who was riding a very old (70's) Free Spirit 10 speed. I don't know how far he went, but I saw him at the 30 mile mark still going strong. I was on a Schwinn MTB with street tires. Rode to Hell's Gate in time to continue, but went south to the finish instead. 76 miles. The weather made this year's ride less of a challenge.
