Post Your Crazy Mashups

Bikes with parts that maybe just shouldn't be put together.

A pink Diamond Back Master tg with 28 wide tires (widest that would fit)
GT BMX stem, 80s vintage mountian bike handlebars, brake levers, and thumb shifter

28 really is as wide as it would take.

It's a blast to ride.

i am against the bmx handling but the reste is very nice... my type of bike

my technium is one of these mashed up monsters that everyone on this forum will spit on (almost)

brakes: canti back -- santé front
rims : salsa delgado cross front / nisi/campy back
road stem / mtb handles+extensions
hybrid pedals, with toe clips tho.
shimano 600 crankset
ame bmx handles
singlespeed to top it off
also a huge dent on the downtube for fear factor
and so on.

i now have enough free parts to build a new monster
i only have to find a bloody frame.

See Frankebike thread:

Some of those are "mash-ups", some are not.

I like the term "mashup" much better than the term "frankenbike," but I suppose they work out to the same thing.

Anyway, here's a mashup of two red bikes: a Sears Free Spirit three speed and a Lambert Grand Prix. Sturmey Archer five speed, drum brakes, dynamo, home-made LED lights, and a variety of lightweight aluminum components.

The college kid who bought this one described it as "cute":

The only pic I have is of a bike-shaped object that I put together a few years ago when I started riding again. I needed a bike that would accomodate my height and weight. I wasn't sure I would stick with riding, and I couldn't afford to buy a new bike, so I put an ad on freecycle for junk bikes. The rear wheel, and the crank came from donor bikes, and I got the ape hangers at a garage sale with a set of NOS Schwinn cruiser bars. The bike is a big pile of crap, but man it was fun to ride, it reminded me of my huffy that I had as a kid. The handlebars have since been robbed and are now on a new style Stingray that my son stole from my flip stash and made his own project.

Those hubs are great. That looks like an old BMX chainring.

"Cute" does not come to my mind but the rear rim is pretty cool. Lots of different parts on that bike.

I bought this Robin Hood for $22, A bargain here but nowhere else I'm aware of. The rear rim was unrecoverable and the AW-3 is on a shelf. The coating of rust and grease are for protective purposes. The seat post and spokes are too shiny, but not for long.
From eBay: a set of track wheels, apparently the seller's first time building. When I true them up enough (rebuild is more likely) the fenders will go back on. Can't wait.

From a Schwinn Traveler (I think) the Dia-Compe brake and lever. Also the Schwinn Approved grips.
From LBS-1 the seat post and plastic clips and the plastic pedals they are glued to.
I didn't bother to cold set the frame so the cones are inside the dropouts, all else is outside. Chainline is good. If I flat there is always an LBS nearby.
I want the biggest front basket and lights (with bottle generator) to complete the project.

i dont know why but i really like this thing.

realestvin7 12-15-10 12:55 PM

Does that chain ring say "Phillips"? What's a plaid bike like that worth? Lol.

one4one 12-15-10 01:18 PM

What's it worth? In my neighborhood that Phillips is the what everyone aspires to own.

realestvin7 12-15-10 02:25 PM

I don't know who or what Phillips is.
