165mm Cranks

Hi,

My wife has a Vitus with early 80's 170mm Campy Neuvo Record cranks with 53/42 chain rings. She needs to have these replaced with 165mm cranks for a proper fit. The newer crank sets are made to work with a 10 speed cassette and my wife's bike has a 7 speed free wheel. The replacement doesn't have to be Campy. Also, a crank that would accomadate a smaller chain ring would be great. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Dennis

I can't really vouch for the quality, but here's an option: https://store.velo-orange.com/index.p...t-special.html. It looks fairly vintage-ish, and offers lower gearing. It should work with your current bottom bracket spindle, though the taper standards are different and it will likely affect your chainline. See here for more on that. Even a more modern Campy square taper crank will change your chainline because old and "new" ISO taper standards are different.

You can shop ebay for more period correct 165 cranks, but the offerings will be scarce. This company offers a crank shortening service, but don't do it to the Nuovo Record cranks!

I see this on ebay... which is only half of the solution, of course. I don't believe it will be that hard to find a pair; I'd post in the "for trade" thread that you have 170's and want 165's, and see what happens.

most 165 cranks cost alot more than 170s especially campy! check out the sugino rd cranks, they have a classic look at a reasonable price, with a 130 bcd you can find smaller modern road chainrings.

Maybe a 110 BCD vintage Sugino crank? Maxy, RT, or the like. You can also find equivalent Sakae ones which should do the trick.
