Newbie question about shifters

Hi all,
I was just wondering if it's possible to switch a bike with stem shifters to downtube shifters using the same derailers. Can I just buy those clamp on downtube shifters and cut the wires to the necessary length? I know bar end shifters is an alternative but I'm not really a fan. Thanks for your help.

Nothing to it, however, you will need to purchase a set of down tube shifters. Your stem shifter band will not fit.

great thanks! And you know how the stem shifters has two metal nubs on the down tube to hold the cable housings in place? Do I just place the downtube shifters in front of those nubs then?

I know in the fast paced internet world I may be a late commer here but, depending on your current shifting system the difficult part may be finding the correct shifters. if you have a indexed 6 or 7spd stem shifter finding clamp on DT shifters may not be so easy.

if you system is friction I would certainly try and score a pair of Suntour "powerratchet" shifters for this job

Absolutely! The Power Shifters are about the best down tubers I have used.

Of course, the Suntour Barcon shifter is the same thing, but mounted on the handlebar ends. For what this is worth, I cannot understand why anyone would prefer down tube shifters to Barcons, but that is just me.

+1, especially if you've already got DT cable stops built onto the frame.
