Ad from 70s with bikes

After a hard 40 mile criterium in the 1970s, the best part of my warm down was kicking back with a Chesterfield cigarette

Hahhahahah. Big Tobacco and their evil ways. Anyone else notice how many movies have people smoking in them? It's fun to look at vintage ads and look how warped things were.

I recall an article in Sporting Cyclist magazine. A cyclist just prior to starting some crazy 12 hour Time Trial smoked a cigarette and had a cup of tea. He stated the cigarette got his heart pumping, sort of a mini warm up. All I could think was, my god you're about to embark on a 12 hr time trial and you need to jump start your heart?

Mountain bikers tend to um... smoke a little... and that doesn't seem to slow them down.

Used to make my mates a little crazy as I'd usually make it to the top first and sometimes had enough lag time to spark one up while I was waiting for them...

I remember somebody posted that Chesterfiled ad a long time back and somebody else said they thought the guy was Sean Connery.

Nevermind......

Somewhat related, I was looking through the course catalog archives from the early 20th century at my previous employer and saw lots of ads for cigarettes and beer. And then there was the headshop in the Student Union my freshman year in college (which was shut down the next year).

I'm sure its all a matter of perspective, but sometimes I wonder which way the trend is spiraling.

From Seattle CL: https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/bik/2140799251.html

Rare Vintage 1970s Italian Road Bike - Garlatti Campagnolo - $140 (Greenlake / Phinney Ridge)

This is a rare piece of cycling history. Built by Italian prison labor in the 1970s (a little creepy and macabre, but historic!) Banned from sale in the USA after it was discovered that prison labor was used to build these bikes. Seat tube is 59.5cm center to center. Campagnolo rear derailleur just needs some cleaning and degreasing. Rear wheel needs replacing or a few new spokes. Wheels take tubular tires. Could be converted to single speed or restored with classic parts.

I bought this on CL a few months ago with the intent to restore with classic campy groupset, but have been too busy to even touch it. This beautiful, lugged steel classic deserves a good home. Selling it for the same price I bought it for.

From todays CBO (Cambria Bicycle Outfitter) email ad promoting Death Row Velo's new 2011 line.

Stand out in the pack with gear that will throw some fear into the competition! CBO is now carrying DeathRow Velo’s uniquely aggro cycling apparel. Designed by hardcore riders to hold up under big mileage, DRV bibs and jerseys are styled to intimidate. Jerseys are made from wicking Coolmax fabric with a cut that hits the sweet spot between race and club fit. Bib shorts feature Coolmax antibacterial chamois with cooling silica gel insert. Make your mark in 2011!

If a roadie bike club can take time out to set up a recreation of that picture, they can't be all bad.

Salute!

Where's that smart a$$ video extolling the virtues of reading threads entirely before posting? I can't find it.
