Date this tire?

Anyone want to take a shot at dating this tire? Its on an 81 Miyata I picked up recently. May not be able to tell from the pic but there's no wear on the tread. Side walls are shot from hanging outside.

I buried this question in another thread so I dont think many have seen this. Pic in the reply.

don't see no stinkin' tire..... did you add it? Try again on the attachment.

My guess is it is from approximately 1950-2005. I base this on a time frame for 27" tires (need to factor in time for the side walls to deteriorate), which I'm guessing an '81 Miyata sold in the USA wore. Since there are several other variables involved, such as, they could be 700c or another sized tire, the date range could be pushed even further back.

Help us out with more clues!

Looks like 1980, manufactured one year prior to your bicycle

I have given up dating tires. They are tiresome and, for what it is worth, rarely well rounded out. No siree. I am tired of tires. How about dating a nice sprocket. Now there is something I could sink my teeth into:-)

Have an '81 Fuji S-12-S with the original 27" x 1 1/8" (28mm) HP Silver Star tires that are still in good shape, despite all the years and miles. Have a new pair of tires just waiting to go on it. Got a valve cap, though, I am curious about. Either a '78 or a '79...not quite sure.

Well that narrows it down. Not trying to break anyone's brain here. I just thought someone might immediately recoginze it. All the extra clues I can tell you is that its a 700c. I just got the bike from a woman that knew nothing about bikes. She didn't tell me how long she had it, but it was hanging under her deck for the last 6 years. I'm just guessing that the tires are at least fifteen years old. She problably bought it the bike for next to nothing on a lark, rode it very little, and eventually put it on craigslist for me to buy. The bike shows some wear, not very much though. I though dating the tire might suggest how much or little the bike had been ridden.

That would be interesting. I haven't had it to my local mechanic yet. If he tells me the parts show very little wear then I guess I have my answer on how much use the bike saw. There are a few nicks in the paint here and there, but thats about it that I can see.

It is best to play the field. My father told me there were plenty of fish in the see. He didn't say anything about bike parts though.

You're a lot better off trying to figure out the year of the bike according to components other than tires, particularly since tires tend to get replaced fairly regularly:

Conti tires with "2000" in the name are mid to late 90's. That was the "millennium" marketing that was popular back then.

Like I pointed out in your Miyata thread my 98 T700 has Top Touring 2000's as the factory tire. In 99 as the Melinium approached you will see a lot of tires that have "3000".
Id ride them. they don't look bad at all.
