Help date / give suggestions & tips on 'building' up my 'new' Eddy Merckx !

First off , a huge thank you to all you BF'ers. This time last year I knew next to nothing about bikes (my first post in CV was about a Raleigh 'Super Fly'...) and thanks to the wealth of knowledge and friendly posters here I feel I've learned a lot.

This knowledge / love of beautiful bikes/the fact the ad was posted here led me to check out an ad for a 60cm Eddy Merckx frame , turns out the seller was someone I had emailed with a bit about finding a vintage touring bike (neither of us having any luck) really nice guy apparently he bought the bike off the original owner who bought it in '85. The owner upgraded it in the late 90's with Campy Chorus (I think) which isthe main reason this seller picked it up (he had a GREAT collection of bikes) after I realized I was leaving with the bike he also gave me a new tubular (Vitto Competition Rally ) a clamp on FD and the LOOK pedals that he got with the bike.

I also bought the tubular wheelset with Camp Super Record hubs. As far as dating the bike let me know which photos would be most helpful I took several and plan on taking many more.

It's beautiful. Clearly been ridden, hard, but certainly cared for. Which is perfect because that's exactly what I hope to do.

Sorry for the questionable pics, it was nearly dark out when I got home so outside wasn't an option. My room is messy and a strange colour, my camera is poor, apologies.

The serial # is:
(the 0 being on the drive side)

E
0 6213

Here's a link to the album of all the photos https://img27.imageshack.us/g/img1507xx.jpg/

The paint is great, a deep red metallic sparkle.

So at this point I need an RD, braze on shifters, and ideally different pedals. I've got to run out now so more to come... Thanks again!

OK I took a few better photos outdoors and thought of a few things I was wondering about

Polishing the brake calipers , can I give them the standard treatment ? Will the red anodizing rub off? (It's not in great shape as is)
As far as sourcing appropriate era quill pedals and a rear derailleur I suppose ebay is my best/only bet. Locally would be a crapshoot I'd assume. Would this derailleur correct ?(for the era) https://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=150540946788

anyone with thoughts on dealing with this chip , and a few other similar small ones? I'm not that keen on touch up paint.

There's a tiny amount of play in the BB , I plan to take it to a LBS to get it checked out.

The FD I got with the bike, I believe it's Super Record .

These are the pedals, well used Look. I don't have much experience with cleats and what not but I wouldn't mind going that route at some point

I was thinking new white tape, white housing, white saddle? I'm open to any/all suggestions though. Any housing brands that are recommended? I'll also need new brake pads for the Modolo brakes. Does anyone have any experience with these in particular? No model name just "Modolo Inter. Patent" Very solid stiff springs. I'm not sure about saddle yet.... I'm sure I'll come up with more questions ,

Oh any thoughts on attempting to determine the year?

Congratulations on your purchase.

Very pretty.

I almost bought her in the late fall!

Just a little too large for me.

In addition, I already have a red bike or two.

I'll pm you some pics I received from the former owner if you want me to. The bike was "built" at that point and quite lustworthy.

I never did get around to the actual dating, but I'd assume early 80's.

I had planned to build it up with an available Super Record gruppo.

You could consider that as well, as you have a pretty nice start there.

Again, a beautiful Merckx that will be, no doubt, lovingly restored.

Don't forget to add her to the Merckx thread if you like.

Oh, white bar tape and a white Regal re-issue would be extra sweet.

Beautiful bike. I think your choice of white for everything is good, although black housing might blend well with white tape and saddle.

The Modolo brakes a likely their 'Professional' model, that came in several different colors.

Oh and I'm in serious need of new hoods, these are being held together with electrical tape. The levers are (Super?) Record I believe, am I paying through the nose for them?

I believe there are a couple of people selling repro NR/SR hoods (ebay?). Do a search here, as there have been some threads, one within the last 4 months or so. IIRC, they were running $50 per pair or so?

Nice grab! I agree with the white tape and regal. That is a really nice color.
You can start trying to date with Cadre.org. There is not as much info on the early 80's but there is some there that can get you started.

After I saw her in person I couldn't help myself, had it been a 58cm I think I would have walked away. I'd LOVE to see those pictures if you've got them around. I'm on my way to a Super Record group but if you happen to see a reasonable priced RD, shifters, or set of pedals around (assuming you're not in the market) don't hesitate to shoot me a message.

I did look around there a bit, seems that the best I can come up with is 'early 80's'

OFG
Whatever you decide, unplug the drain hole in the BB.
I thought that was a tad odd, what's the reasoning to have it plugged?

Also, is/was there any difference between Record and Super Record shifters? I 've seen a few advertised as either and they seem to be damn similar.

Same question re: Quill Pedals. Would it be a travesty if I put the all chrome 'Record' pedals on instead of hunting ebay for a pair with some black trim that isn't going to cost me more than the wheelset did.

anyone have experience with this stuff ? White/Red would look pretty good though perhaps a bit... garish?

Also, anyone know of the correct Kool-Stop replacements brake pads for the Modolo Professional calipers?

crappy picture

Oh, if you don't like touch up paint, you might try nail polish. As far as touch up paint, I found a Toyota color that was very similar to my British Racing Green and it works just fine.

If you need a little bit of touch up paint you should check out Gooch's Bike and Hobby shop on Portage. Test it under the bb to make sure its gonna work.
