the 89 world sport has slightly different geometry than the 88... the 88 is more of a touring geometry i think. i used to have an 87 which is the same as the 88 and liked it but for some reason i haven't been that pleased with the 89. i haven't ridden it very much though maybe i should give it a second chance. it's freaking heavy though! i wonder how much the frame alone weighs..

The frame isn't too bad. Maybe another 2-3lbs heavier for the frame set compared to the Tenax ones? The fork is worst offender, it weighs a ton. I think the cheap components add a lot of extra weight too. I noticed my bars are "alloy sleeved" steel bars.

Too bad about the 89 geo. I say sell it off and make room for something you'll enjoy riding.

Excellent. Love the red/white paint and the new Concor saddle. Schwinn must have ordered enough of those SR posts to last through the millenium. Seems like everything that came out of their factory was fitted with a Laprade style post. Kind of annoying because they're kind of heavy and don't seem to clean up very well - not to mention that the notches always seem to be juuuust between the saddle angle I want.

Next thing you need are bottle cages...I vote for white!

i've got the same bike here.. it kindly donated some of its 600 gruppo for my ironman .. except i though the super sport only came in pink and white.. can't find a red/white fade SS in any catalog. weird. but 87 was the last year SS shows up in the catalogs

^ I was wondering where the leather from my Psychiatrist's couch went. Did that replace your Cilo?

I said it before and I'll say it again, I love this thread.

I'll keep the Cinelli stem... I've seen quite a few of the red and white ones around on this forum but I don't have an 87 catalog.

Thanks!...bottle cages...hmmm...I need to lay my hands on a water bottle with the 80s stripes on it if there is such an animal.

here's the schwinn catalogs: https://www.trfindley.com/pg_schwinn_cats.htm

the cinelli stem is nice but i dont like the fact it only accepts cinelli bars. i decided not to use it and used an old SR stem instead.. probably some kind of bike blasphemy lol

The Red/White one never appeared in any catalog that I've seen.

Best as I can figure, the early '87 models were the Pink/White ones. Schwinn found that that color option wasn't selling very well so they changed it to the Red/White version. Since the catalogs are produced in the preceding year, the Red/White scheme came about too late to make it into the catalog. Complete speculation on my part, but the Red/White ones are definitely '87 models.

My 1988 23" Schwinn Tempo as it sat after my ride today.

I've had it running for a while now, but it wasn't until this past week that I trued up the original wheels and put them on.

Thanks to Henry III for getting it to me safely, rccardr for a matching crank arm to replace the rounded off one that it had and Scottryder for a NOS 7 speed cassette on the Hyperglide body I transplanted onto the rear wheel.

The RSX 7 speed STI levers I had from some time ago.

My '86 Schwinn Tempo, Columbus Tenax frame. I bought two of these from the original owners (man and wife) and sold the champagne colored one. I upgraded the saddle, wheels, rear derailleur and shifters (now has 8-speed hyperglide cassette), but I did the upgrades to stay with original design -- DT shifters, 36 spoke box rim wheels. Otherwise it's all original (this one had barely been ridden to begin with). More pictures at https://skydrive.live.com/?sc=photos...!965&sc=photos

When first seeing the title of this thread, I was thinking about posting pics of my lowly traveler after I have redone the bar tape and cables.

But after seeing the pics in this thread, it is obvious that I am nowhere near worthy.......

Seriously, though.....wow.....just wow....some really, really nice bikes. Makes me wish that I had had the money to jump on that Super Sport for sale for $175 I saw a week ago.....in the same pink/white colors as that one on the 1st page. Ah well.

Some very, very nice Schwinns.

I saw a listing today for a late 80s peloton for $50...but it was too tall and too far away. If I ever find out who got the rest of my legs.....

Tugrul, that turned out really nice! I have an '88 frame in storage for a winter project but the paint is completely trashed so it will have to be refinished.

Lovin' than '86 as well, Mobilemail.

Thanks again rccardr.

There is a fair amount of rash on mine (half the rear derailleur logo is gone), but I'm content to wax it over and call it patina, maybe adding some of my own to it.
