Finished this last night for a member of our BikeMS team. Still a few details to work out but it's a nice riding resto-mod.

'88 24 inch Tempo, 5500 triple group (thanks, Khatful!), Mavic CXP22's. Seat/bar height and angles have not yet been fitted to the new owner. Steer tube is higher than I'd have it on my own bike, but the NO isn't particularly limber and likes his bars high relative to the seat. This puts them an inch or so higher without resorting to a tall Nitto.








Got a couple more Tempos in the pipeline, including a 21" with 9 speed DT shifters and a very special 23" '87 that's all black including a 105 setup with black brifters.

Kind of like a Schwinn Black Lightning.

Former owner of the bare frame claimed he bought it NOS a couple of years ago. Might be true (although based on the condition of the original paint I'd say it was a pretty harsh couple of years), but I suspect that the fork wasn't part of the original package. It's a Tange but a slope top one instead of flat, and the steer tube is clearly at least an inch or so longer than it should be. Normally I'd just slice off the excess steer tube but in this case it worked out to be exactly what the new (and very happy) owner needed.

Im sure to upset purists here, but I dont care. I rescued this poor little schwinn le tour from rotting away in the desert sun, neglected. I gave it new life as cost effectively as possible, by converting it to 700c and single speed. Its an incredibly fun ride now that everything has been set to fit me properly.

It looks similar if not identical to the sloped crown on my 1988, so nothing lost there.

Random question, is a powder coat finish hard enough not to get worn by shifter cables from STI on the head tube?

So far it seems more durable than most original paint jobs, but it will still get rub marks. Not shown in the pics are two rubber Jagwire doodads that cover the cable housing to protect the finish. I've also used fuel tubing from the radio control section of the hobby shop for the same purpose- just buy the larger size and either run it over the housing or slit it down the long side and slide it on. You can even cut it into shorter rubber donuts.

OK, I think it's a '91, not early '80's, but my CrissCross has turned into a wonderful commuter and work bike. And it's definitely the high mileage bike in the stable this year:



Had to make a few changes to get it this way. Biggest swap was getting rid of the SunTour Accushift (never had an indexed setup that absolutely refused to shift on the fourth cog before) in favor of a combination of Shimano Alivio derailleurs and STX shifter/brake levers (and then swapped the cantilevers to STX just to match). Leather Favorit seat, the usual Planet Bike fenders and Performance rear rack. This is a found bike at the local dump, and definitely the best commuter I've had in a long while.

I route my cables from right brifter, to left side of downtube stopper, and left shifter, to right side of downtube stopper. And then x-ed over in downtube behind the h2o bosses. That way, the shifter cables don't kink and have a gentle bend to it and doesn't get anywhere near the headtube.

I found this one in a storage facility clean-out for $20. Made some modifications to suit my needs. (details found in link)

Made a few updates to my 1987 Prelude. Changed the crankset to Ultegra 6500 with black FSA rings, Dura Ace 7400 front and rear derailleurs, 9 speed barcons, 8 speed cassette, Ritchey bars, Tektro levers, Dura Ace stem, Velomax Circuit wheels, 700x28 Gatorskins, Ultegra 6500 brakes, and a ratty old Arione that I get along with really well. The bottle cages are temporary.

Orrery

Just finished building this one. REALLY late 80's, ahem, '92 Series 2 PDG, but with the groupset off of a Series 5 (Campy Strada rims to 105SC hubs, full Shimano 105SC). Cinelli bars/stem. Not sure if I'll sell it or keep it either for a backup road bike/nice weather commuting, or I might leave it at my folks' house so I can ride in the North Shore of MA, which has some nice cycling.
