This is the late 80's Schwinn I took out today for it's maiden voyage. Still need to dial in the front bar setup and then I'll add on the bar tape. It was no where near as bad riding the bullhorns as I was worried about.
It's got a 1988 frame number but a 1987 headbadge stamp, the opposite of what would be expected.

Some of you may remember this rust bucket of mine I posted way back. I originally built it SS for a wheel but got bored of it. I tore it apart and let it sit in my storage for 6 months.
I finally pulled it out and built it her up. It still need some tweaks (Bar wrap job was quick to get it rideable) but the thing flat out flies. tighter geo and shorter top tube help me short arms

Looking good. I appreciate and enjoy shorter top tubes, even at 6'5". Mid-'80s Schwinn did that well.

My new to me 1988 Tempo. I've been out on two rides with it and really love the way it feels but it looks like I'm going to have to swap wheels as at 6'3 and 240 lbs the original Wolber's keep giving me trouble. Anybody have any suggestions for a better wheel?

They're what, Wolber Alpines laced to 1050 series hubs, 32 hole? That's acrually a pretty strong wheel, even for a 240 pounder. You don't specify what problems the wheels are giving you, but assume they keep going out of true. Could be they've been badly tensioned in the past, nipples are corroded, etc.
I'd disassemble them and relace (if this is new to you, loosen all of the spokes one turn, then another go round at two turns, then replace one at a time) with Sapim stainless DB spokes, which will cost you about $30 from Dan's Comp, then have them professionally tensioned and trued by someone you really trust. Total cost under $100 and should completely solve your problem.
I'd disassemble them and relace (if this is new to you, loosen all of the spokes one turn, then another go round at two turns, then replace one at a time) with Sapim stainless DB spokes, which will cost you about $30 from Dan's Comp, then have them professionally tensioned and trued by someone you really trust. Total cost under $100 and should completely solve your problem.

I took it to an LBS and had it fixed and only got me another 5 miles before it went bad again. I've got a Miyata with the same or similar wheels and haven't had an issue though so maybe I'll have to change the spokes.

Yes, likely the spokes were over tensioned at some point. New spokes and nipples properly tensioned, stress relieved and trued by a knowledgeable pro (maybe not the folks who trued 'em the last time) should last pretty much forever without a lot of attention.

I've only found two pics on the internet of the silvery blue '83 Super Sport SP and one was a repaint. Early 80's Voyageurs seem to be more abundant. I think this bike will be a nice complement to my '84 Schwinn Peloton. Both were built by Panasonic and have matching Aero Mighty cranks, Sakae "eagle" handlebars, and chrome RH chainstays.

If those are 23 (or labeled as such) tire : A wider tire could help. Perhaps an isolated incident but had a customer a few years back with the same scenario. installed 25s on his bike (same wheels) and bingo, problem resolved. If you can fit 28s thats even better.

1989 Schwinn Paramount Waterford build
Details of the bike are in this thread 89 Schwinn Paramount Waterford Build Cyclart repaint
PO wanted to streamline the look of the frame so he had the top tube cable guides removed and new ones brazed on to the NDS before having Cyclart repaint the frame red from its former tired white. It's now flawless.
He also buiilt the bike with an eclectic mix of Campy parts - from a newer Record headset to Cobalto brakes to C Record Calipers and Campy SR Cranks with Pat 84 Super Record RD.
Winter has set in and I've barely ridden it so it will have to wait till next spring to evaluate the ride. I may try to rationalize the components to one era for the sake of consistency. 80's SR is more my style so that's probably what I'll do.

I am sure, but man...do I need to get one of these! There was a 25" 1983 Super Le Tour for sale in Portland earlier this year. Dark warm grey metallic with silver head tube and black lettering. No SS SP, but a nicer Schwinn of that era. One day perhaps. For now though, thank you for picking that one up and snapping some photos of it so we can see what it looks like outside of the catalog!

Almost missed the pics of the SS SP! It's a pretty bike, and different from most with the head tube painted another color. Looks to be in pretty good condition too.
I haven't seen but a couple, including yours, with the different color head tube. I wonder why there seems to be so few.
