Almost missed the pics of the SS SP! It's a pretty bike, and different from most with the head tube painted another color. Looks to be in pretty good condition too.
I haven't seen but a couple, including yours, with the different color head tube. I wonder why there seems to be so few.

tyler_fred 11-10-17 06:48 PM

I've wondered the same. I've seen several pics of '82 and older, and '84 and up. And as pointed out earlier, Voyageurs seem abundant. This was the year that the SS moved away from touring and towards competition. Perhaps buyers were wary of the newly styled SS.

I'm hoping to score a couple touch up pens at the auto parts store that will be close enough to the OEM colors. There's a few scratches but they are minimal in size.

I ordered Dia Compe replacement gum brake hoods from Velo Orange yesterday. I hope they fit these Gran Compes.

Ugh! So jealous. Paint looks better in your pics than it did in the ad.

tyler_fred 11-10-17 06:58 PM

I don't know about that.

I live about 1-1/2 hrs south of you. Would love to ride with you and Pilotfishbob someday on an All Vintage Schwinn ride.

The Peloton and I would be delighted. :thumb:

A little soap and water did wonders for the SS SP...

^ Looking good, shiny and new!

jamesdak 11-13-17 01:46 PM

Picked this up yesterday. Really grimy and with a taco'd rear wheel. A little elbow grease revealed a very nice Circuit under all the dirt. This is another 1987 Circuit with a nice Shimano 600 build.

Hubba hubba! Shiny paint, mmmmmmmm.

Hardrock23 11-16-17 05:16 AM

They both look great!
Didn't realize the Circuit was actually matte black...I like it!

Really Nice, is that drivetrain original?

tyler_fred 11-16-17 03:58 PM

^^ Not the original drive train as spec'd in the Schwinn catalog; however, I asked JDak if the original purchaser could have requested a swap out of components as part of the original purchase deal. Possible, but no definitive conclusion. JDak noted that the '87 Super Sport had this very drivetrain, so it is possible that the dealer swapped for the customer...for a nominal fee.

Back in 1989, we traded-in my wife's almost-new Raleigh Technium for a smaller Schwinn 564. We asked that the cranks/BB's and saddle be swapped between the bikes. Dealership was happy to oblige.

jamesdak 11-16-17 07:31 PM

^ Beat me too it, LOL! It's such a nice bike with it's nicely matching groupset. I'd love to find the proper rim to rebuild the jacked up rear wheel even if it's not the cheapest fit because it's all matching with such little wear. Cheapest fix would be using one of my spare wheels with a spare 8 speed cassette and just buying a brand new set of Shimano DT shifters to shift it. Or spend nothing and friction shift it. Will probably come down to if it fits my son or not....

Really nice 1987 Circuit!

I have an 87 Super Sport which was fitted with a 5 speed rear cassette, Sachs/Huret derailleurs, and tubular wheels. I want to restore it to original condition like your Circuit!

danarello 11-21-17 07:06 PM

May I enquire what kind of wheel set up you have on that Circuit?

jamesdak 11-21-17 07:28 PM

^ They're Shimano 600 hubs laced to 32 hole Rigida SX100 rims. Basically for what ever reason this has all the components on it from the 1987 Super Sport like you have listed as one of your bikes.

... So I want to use cloth tape on the bars; however, I can't seem to decide what color looks best. Black is the only other option I've considered..:foo: HELP!!

I'd go with blue. Medium blue.

@tyler_fred - that turned out great!

Here is a Tempo I found at Goodwill. Too small so I passed it on.

I'm not big on red, but the red kinda works here for some reason. But I think light gray, powdery or slightly darker blue (not bright), or maybe white, would work as well.

Its got little bits of rust all over it, but you can't see that so don't worry about it :innocent:

I had the red laying around, so thought I would try it for a bit. It's okay, but doesn't appeal to me..

Doc, Hardrock23.. If only I had some used blue laying around to give a try..

I have a couple rolls of new black Cateye tape, but again, just can't seem to pull the trigger.

I think it's the dark blue head tube that's throwing me off.:twitchy:
