I posted this in the Derailleur Eye Candy thread yesterday, but I have no way of knowing if any of you looked at that Zombie thread. I really want everyone to see the fabulous job DrilliumDude did on this

I forget how the idea came up but in PMing with DDude about pertecanta chain holders one of got the idea to drillium a Chorus RD. here is the results of DrilliumDudes handywork.

DrilliumDude thank you again for such a fabulous job.

That's actually extremely attractive.

Capecodder 01-16-11 08:23 AM

That's really nice work.... Now I know why he calls himself (Drillium) Dude.....

RobbieTunes 01-16-11 08:25 AM

Add some pre-drilled jockey wheels, and you're there.

Chombi 01-16-11 09:35 AM

Sort of reminds me of an Abalone.....The holes look so natural and seems to have been designed into the RD by Campagnolo.
I wish I could drill as well as DD.
Will the drillium movement come back in a big way too?

I admire folks with artistic talent and attention to detail.

Our man DD has ample helpings of both!

junkfoodjunkie 01-16-11 10:14 AM

That is very nice!

What a unique piece of bike jewelry. I don't think I've ever seen a slant parallelogram RD done in drillium...now it's got me thinking.

BlueDevil63 01-16-11 11:33 AM

Very nice work!

+1. I don't know what his secret is for drilling at perfect intervals, but he certainly is masterful at it.

I agree! I have trouble drilling a straight hole in a 1/2" sheet of plywood let alone a perfectly spaced series of holes.

thanks for you great comments everyone

Aw, you guys and gals are great - thanks for the nice comments :)

BG, I'm very happy you enjoy the finished project; it was a fun departure to work on something modern for a change!

could/would you go more modern? i have a 10spd centaur RD i debating drilling. the only "issue" may be the lack of material available to drill. then there is also the chainrings...

here is a photo from someone's flicker account (thanks)

Pretty, but I don't approve. The only logical reason for doing this has been to reduce weight. But, with aluminum, how much weight could possibly been saved? Not to mention that it could lead to catastrophic failure of the piece.

thirdgenbird 01-16-11 01:46 PM

pretty is logical enough for me. my seatpost could be used for an anchor (ok not quite) but the holes make it all worth it. we all need one "shallow" bike right?

great work drilliumdude

what is the build plan bianchigirll? will there be other drillium work?

Drillium Dude 01-16-11 01:49 PM

^Nah, the expressed reason in doing this for BG was to add some prettiness :)

Even back in the heyday of drillium, I think it's safe to say it was more about personalizing one's bike than saving weight (that's what Arnold Industries/OMAS ergal sets were for!). I mean, I think this might have shaved the weight of a couple commemorative postage stamps...

weight - shmeight! I had no thoughts of saving weight at all simply to make it unique.

as for a build plan... I actually think it is going on that K2 carbon frame eventually. I have a few other projects I need to get done first.
