My 1970's Peugeot Mixte Singlespeed project

Hi,
I bought a Peugeot mixte and wanted to restore it and sell it. We'll basically a very good clean and new cables etc. But i have decided against that now and have decided to make a Singlespeed conversion as i think this clean look will suit this frame.
I stripped the bike to nut and bolts and have been slowly cleaning and putting back together. I have cleaned and put new grease in the bottom bracket and headset. Installed a vintage 18 tooth singlespeed cog onto the Normandy hubs. The bike has Philippe porteur bars and stem and a nice petite luggage rack on the front brake. I think it is coming along nicely but it is far from finished. I am looking around for a Vintage tan leather seat and would like leather bar grips as well.

Here is a photo of it so far. Let me know what you think.
Thanks

I think it's fantastic! I would love to build something very similar, perhaps with an IGH.

Daveyates 01-19-11 02:26 PM

Thanks ctmullins by the way what does IGH mean?

Looking good,

Nice looking cranks, love the color and really like the curves on those brake levers.

Lose the pump,it really clashes with the couch. ;)

Ok thanks! I'm thinking of doing the same with an old Peugeot PX8 that i have.

Daveyates 01-19-11 02:48 PM

The cranks are Stronglight TS.

mixtemaniac 01-19-11 05:29 PM

nice! did you need to use any spacers or anything to get the chainline right? Or, did you just unthread the fw cluster and tread on a single speed freewheel?

Daveyates 01-20-11 04:28 AM

Well i exchanged the cluster for a singlespeed cog and the chainline is way off.
I have removed the axle and bearings to clean and will be re-greasing them. Then I'll swap the spacers to the opposite sides to bring the hub over. Then I'll re-dish the wheel to centre it.

Very nice. Just can't beat the lines of a mixte for simple elegance.

Nearly finished!

Just have to fit both new tyres and handlebar grips now.

nice! she's a beauty

ctmullins 01-24-11 09:33 AM

Tres belle, vraiment!

Maddox 01-24-11 12:57 PM

Love it. I'm a huge fan of the cheapo/low-level Peug's of the 70's, and I've never seen a gold-finished model stateside. That finish must have been only a European-production feature.

Really beautiful bike. I would ride that.

Italuminium 01-24-11 03:05 PM

nice. I cleaned up a pretty white UE-18 mixte for my sister one weekend, such a pretty bike. I'm still looking for those awesome flat yet swept back handlebars for my fixie, does anyone knows what they are called?

michael k 01-24-11 04:21 PM

They look similar to Vo's Porteur handlebars.

I've seen the gold color here in the US, so it's not completely rare.

I have one of these mixte frames with the same crank, sitting around. If anyone is interested, send me an email.

marley mission 01-24-11 04:43 PM

email sent :)

Daveyates 01-29-11 10:57 AM

Well the bike is all finshed now and ready for sale.
I have advertised it for 150 Euros.
I hope it sells soon as i want to get and restore a randonneuse next!

It looks like the chain needs a half link.

Italuminium 01-31-11 04:43 AM

Thanks Michael! unfortunately ordering from VO to Europe seems like a pain in the derrière, I'm still trying to figure out how much shipping, handling and taxes I have to pay to get it shipped to the land of tulips, windmills and good old chronic.

Biofuel 01-31-11 08:25 AM

nice bike! I like the color

Daveyates 01-31-11 08:43 AM

Well it sold for the asking price to the first person to view it.
On to the next bike!

noglider 01-31-11 01:13 PM

Since it sold that well, it means you could have gotten more. I sell multi-gear bikes like that, with no rack and no fenders, and I never get less than $225 (165€) when it's a mixte frame. Women like them, and they're very good looking. You did an excellent job.
