Popular tubular rims in 1997-2000 or so?
What would have been popular tubular rims in that late 90's timeframe?
Anything stand out? |
Mavic Mach2's. I've got a pair for sale, if you're interested. Mavic GP4's were also a good choice, though they were around for a while by then and were being replaced by the Reflex.

Matrix Titan aero's come to mind.
Or Zipp's. |
Let me provide more background.
You have a 1988 racing bike. Love the frame. It's now 1997-2000...you're starting to wear out the 10 year old components and upgrade to Dura-Ace 9 speed. You have to build up new wheels. What rims do you look at here? Suggestions so far: Mavic Reflex Mavic Mach2 Mavic GP4 Matrix Titan Something Zipp Any others? |

I'll look around. Can't remember when I used those last. Might be the correct timeframe. Also, I probably would suggest DA hubbed/Araya Aero 1s as well. in the meantime: http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hn...174162432.html Also, check out the eye-candy at Matuzmaster's site: http://matuzmaster.hu/en/wheels/ |
Sun or Matrix with semi-aero profiles were becoming popular, but as mentioned GP 4's are pretty standard. What bike?

Ambrosio - Synthesis, Metamorphosis, Montreal, Crono or Nemesis.

When did Nisi drop off the radar as a brand?
|
I have used most of the rims already mentioned and find the Mavic Reflexes to be my personal favorite. I am currently replacing the Mavic Mach2s on my Serotta Colorado II with the Refexes. Nothing wrong with the old hoops just wanted the superior braking surfaces you get from machined sidewalls.
Also agree with the suggestion to go with DA hubs, esp on a Fuji |
The hubs will be Ultegra 6500 9-speed, also proper at the time. For the miniscule (if any) performance difference in the 7700 hubs I can't justify the price the 7700 hubs go for in an acceptable condition.
Besides, according to Shimano specs, the 6500 hubset is 30g lighter than the 7700 hubset :) I'm leaning towards the Mavic Reflex...I agree with GeraldChan, MSW would be a nice addition, and still work time-wise. There's a pair with the ceramic coating on the brake surfaces on eBay right now...HHHhhhmmmmm :) EDIT: Mach 2's with ceramic coating... |
FWIW I used 6500 hubs with Velocity Aerohead rims and I wouldn't pay the extra for DA hubs.
Had these on my son's Colnago Super and they were plenty good for daily use. Performance wise, I see a lot of folks using these on cyclocross builds and they are tough. If DA hubs come installed on a bike, great. But, I certainly wouldn't cough up the dough for an upgrade. I also love Mavic Reflex rims. My wife raced last summer with a set of these on her De Rosa. No adjustments/truing necessary after 1,800 miles! http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4121/...357d7bfa_b.jpg |
If the hubs need repacking then just upgrade the loose ball bearings with #25 grade steel bbs. They are the best on the market in terms of size uniformity and roundness and they are exceptionally hard. Pack with Phil Wood grease and they will be better than standard DA hubs.
|
Yeah, I haven't touched the hubs yet. I'm partial to Finish Line Teflon grease for hubs though...like the way it spins. I need to check into balls though, thanks for the tip.
|
Another idea, expand to clinchers...were the CXP series from Mavic around in the late 90's? Any other popular clinchers at that time?
|
Oh come on, you don't want to do that when you're just getting a nice collection of tubulars going!
...Though if you decide not to stick with tubulars, I'll take those light weight rims you got from the co-op off your hands. :P (Still keeping an eye out for some light rims to ship down to me? :)) |
