1984 Schwinn Paramount
Well, here is the rest of the Paramount I posted about yesterday.

These are off the 1984 Schwinn Paramount I somehow beat the horde to on the Boston CL today. The rest of the components are easy enough, Shimano 600EX brake levers/calipers, Superbe Pro shifters, front derailleur and seat post. It has some abominable adjustable height stem with Cinelli bars, but that might be ok for now as it turned out to be only 57cm CTC (570 stamped on the Cinelli BB). I haven't figured out the wheels yet.
I'll see whether I want to brave the cold tomorrow for photos. It is filthy and well used (the bent drop out screws are apparent, the front caliper could use a new QR assembly, all the paint chips seem shiny, chromed frame?). Kurt, the serial number on the NDS dropout is A8422 (22 not clear, fades into contour). The DS dropout has portacatena holes. Clamp on front derailleur. Columbus sticker is missing the useful half. Over BB routing. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Iy1t9Kxyj9I/TT..._DriveSide.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Iy1t9Kxyj9I/TT...Seat_Tubes.jpg http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Iy1t9Kxyj9I/TT...P_Top_Tube.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Iy1t9Kxyj9I/TT..._Down_Tube.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Iy1t9Kxyj9I/TT..._Head_Tube.jpg http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Iy1t9Kxyj9I/TT...om_Bracket.jpg http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Iy1t9Kxyj9I/TT...at_Cluster.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Iy1t9Kxyj9I/TT...ift_Levers.jpg http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Iy1t9Kxyj9I/TT...Fork_Crown.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Iy1t9Kxyj9I/TT...ake_Bridge.jpg |
These are pretty nondescript hubs. Just a sticker with seal bearings wrapping around them. The freewheel is a Sachs 7 speed.

The "A" in the serial number means built in January of 1984 and it was the 22nd framset. I'm assuming it has the rainbow decals like my black '83. By mid 1984 the decals were switched to the 1980s and 1990s standard style, so your Paramount is near to the end of the Rainbow line.

Another interesting transition which occurred at the end of '84 was the switch to under the BB cable routing. This white November '84 has the standard decals and top cable routing.

Nice find, and I agree the stem's got to go.
Congrats! |
Great find :thumb:
If not to personal, what you pay for it? I was trying to get a nice Paramount frame off Ebay, but they go crazy over there and bid to high h*ll.. |
Good going Tugral, you'll have to join our 2nd annual Paramount ride out of Newburyport next summer ..

He was a bit generous in his measurement of the seat tube, 23", which to be fair is the measurement to the peak of the seat cluster. If he had said 57cm, I probably would have passed, and hoped not to see it on eBay. The ad was horrible though, no photos, not much in it beyond the title "Blue Paramount Campi Parts". Somehow it turned out to be exactly the generation/shade of blue/decal set I had envisioned. The previous owner had bought it from the first owner in 1991. I think he said she raced it back in her college days. He was moving overseas, and had picked up a new SRAM equipped bike, and didn't realize how much of a gem this was. |

I paid the asking price of $200. It is well used if not a bit abused, so I don't feel guilty about it, but I'm sure it's still less than market as-is. There were three other suitors ready to pay, sight unseen, which wasn't hard to believe. The fact that he replied to my email requesting dimensions and let me have first shot at it was.

Way cool. Glad I didn't see that. I also missed the Celeste Bianchi for $200 with matching frame pump and tubulars.

I wonder if this bike got a re-spray. I thought those decals were much newer, like the '88 era.

Wow. I'm stumped on the decals! I thought I had it figured out that the decals transitioned sometime during the summer of 1984. But if your Paramount is stamped "A8422," and A = January, I must be wrong. Unless it was repainted, but if that was the case, it is even more of a sin, considering it's current condition.
I'm glad you rescued this Paramount from the abuse and misuse it was suffering. You will love the way it rides. |
At $200 that's a steal! Congratulations.

Would it be worthwhile to ping Waterford about this bike? I don't want to waste their time unless it has turned out useful information before.
