TTT Model 84 Quill Stem Removal

Trying to adjust my stem and it seems to be stuck. It's on a bike that was used as an all weather commuter before I bought it and has been my rain bike for about 6 months or so. Suspect it has not seen grease for awhile and has seized. I do not believe this using a typical jamb wedge so I'm not sure how it secures. I can back out the bolt with no success though in loosening the stem. It goes into an alloy steerer tube but the fork legs are Carbon Fiber and I don't want to put much force on them.

Any idea how to get this quill stem free?? If it was a wedge I'd just try tapping a rubber mallet on the wedge bolt but with this stem I'm not sure. Thanks in advance

All quill stems have some type of a wedge, your stem has a spit wedge like a wine cork with 2 slots to keep it from spinning freely. loosen the bolt and rap on with a mallet. If it is seized then you will need some type of PB blaster or Liquid wrench and a lot of time to get if free. You might also try a heat gun to the stem headset area to free it up. Usually one of these methods work but if not then it means cutting the stem off to save the fork.

wow that is a tuff one. I was going to suggest the pouring amonea in from the bottom but that is closed.

Loosen the bolt, make sure the wedge is not stuck, soak with PB Blaster, or better yet, Kroil, for at least 24 hours. Most of the time, if you do all of this, it will come out.

Just loosen the bolt and tap with a rubber mallet. That is what I always have to dp with mine.

Stuck stems and seat post are a pain. I use this procedure to remove a stuck stem or post. I never apply great twisting, pulling or banging pressure to remove a stuck component.

Hope this is a help.

Thanks all - A little soaking and the rubber mallet got it loose just fine. All that for only about 1/4 inch gain in height. Really trying to set the bike up for relaxed long distance rides so I may try to source a taller stem.
