Seattle swap meet, Sunday Feb 13th

Ok northwest C&V'ers - who is headed to the Cascade club swap meet this Sunday. Roger M, Abarth, Kpug505 and myself will hopefully be able to meet up. Anyone else planning on being there?

Hmmmm...this is not going to be in conjunction with the Bike Expo this year? I'm nearly flat broke right now, so this will probably be the first time in 5 years I may miss it!

I was really looking forward to picking up some beat-up drillium stock, too.

Well...I might just go anyway and do a few trades; I've got some stuff to part with.

PM for cell number and maybe some of us can get together for some of Seattle's famous coffee.

DD,

We have a major swap here this Sunday.

Anything I should grab for you to practice on if I see a great deal?

Grady - that would be awesome! If you find any old Nuovo Record front or rear derailleurs for under $20 I'll be able to turn them around and give them new life. I've got a hankering for derailleurs lately; set aside the brake levers for a month or two.

Finder's fee, coming up. I really appreciate the assist - thanks!!

Seattle Center has pay lots around it and there's a lot of street parking also. According to the Cascade site the street parking is free on Sundays.

Me and Kpug505 will be there real early. May be we should all meet up afterward and talk vintage bikes over a burger and fries.

Yo...Checkin' in. I'll be there for sure! Can't wait. I'm scouting for high end 90's MTB stuff and maybe some Superbe Pro or Dura Ace for my newest frame. I'll likely pick up any weird rear derailleurs I see as well. Another Stronglight A9 or one of those nifty Sveadraa (sp?) headsets would be cool too. Oh! And Cobra or OMAS lightening product for NR drivetrain. I'd kill for a Hi-E bottle cage too but those are like hens teeth. K...I'm rambling. =( Can you tell I'm excited?

Hope to see y'all there!

That's an idea. I think I will come up with a list of "need" and "want" before I hit the swap.

Will that kind of stuff be there? I need lots of that stuff. Only road bits I need at the moment are some new bars.

Doubt I'll be able to trip up there, but one never knows.

I'm hoping to be there, but not until 10 at the earliest. Probably wearing a black FixedGearGallery hoodie (and probably not the only one.)

I look forward to being there nice and early for the first time in years. A true rookie, anyone want to share their favorite strategies for finding the really cool stuff. Would I be too geeky if I wore a Tshirt stating that I seek vintage 80's Mtb stuff?
Cheers,
T

^ Lots of small bills is a must - nothing bigger than a tenner. Dress like a ragamuffin - you will instill pity in the seller and should get a deal; if you're looking for deals, you don't want to dress too nicely, however, you don't want to look/smell like a homeless person, either. Just look temporarily poor - like a college student

You'll find your way around the floor pretty quickly and know who's selling what - there will be tables where vintage road is all they have, same with MTB stuff and of course the new stuff (clothing, bikes and parts). If you're looking for MTB stuff from back in the day, you may very well be in luck; I've seen a lot of it over the past few Bike Swaps and it always seems still to be in the sale boxes at the end of the day. Unless there's been some sort of seismic shift in the vintage MTB scene, I can't think why this year should be any different.

Oh, and of course, the best advice of all: don't look too eager!

I don't think so. I've seen people there with a sandwich board pinned to the back of a jacket stating they wanted something in particular. Besides...I wouldn't worry about looking geeky there anyways. It's a war zone! Plan to be pushed, have your toes stepped on, get a frame to the shin and plan to be aggressive yourself. If you see something pick it up. Don't stand there staring at it 'cause I will be right behind you and I'll sneak in on the right and grab it after tapping your left shoulder! =)

The first 90 minutes are definitely crazy and a blast. I agree with Kpug - if you see something you're even remotely interested pick it up. Someone can always reach around you and grab it. It helps to know what you're looking for ahead of time.

The first year I went I picked up my Pay it Forward Nishiki from Kpug and before I got out the door someone had offered me $20 for it. You never know what'll happen.

I just got home from the swap meet. I met up with Scozim, Drillium Dude, Abarth, and Kpug505. It was good to finally meet some BF members. I didn't arrive early, so I may have missed out on some of the good parts for sale. Scozim was kind enough to give me a Motobecane Mirage frame that was too big for him(stuck seat post included). He also had a set of Weinmann 605 brakes for my PSV10 project.

I picked up some levers, tires, and a few other things. It was a good time, and I will plan on going next year.

Got a:

Carnielli Stem (love the Faux lugged look!)
FSA MegaExo Ceramic BB
Front Braze-on adapter clamp
3T Record stem + Unknown Crit Bars

All for $50

I regret not picking up a pair of 3T Pista track bars that I sat on. They went for such a good price that I am embarassed that I didn't buy it right away... Also forgot to come back to for a Ritchey seatpost.

You may not think I'm too kind by the looks of that seatpost. Pleasure meeting you also.
