Need help to identify a Fuji.
I acquired this little gem yesterday from the neighbor down the road who was about to kick it to the curb for the garbage men to take. From what I can tell by the serial number (78A00420), it has a birthdate of January 1978 and was the 420th one to roll off the line. I just can't seem to figure out from pics what model it is. The only markings, other than the serial number, is the word SunTour stamped on the dropouts and the word FUJI stamped underneath where the head badge would be. Any ideas?

I'll take a quick stab and say it's a Sports 10. If you have more photos that would help.

No problem. More pics on the way.

Here's a few more. Hopefully they will help. I'm not sure if it's the Sport 10. I haven't been able to weigh the frame but it seems very light compared to my 82 Schwinn World. I don't know if that would make a difference.

I checked the catalog photos, it looks like the Sports 10 had double eyelets in the rear whereas the Gran Tourer looks like it has a single. However, both models had a brazed on cable stop on the chain stay. Your's looks like it's missing or never had one. Are there any indication parts have been removed, the RD hanger maybe? Maybe someone else will chime in.

I wish there was. I don't see where anything has been removed. I've looked this thing over with a fine tooth comb and even scraped on the paint to see if I could find remnants of the original color. My neighbor told me that he had got it when it was a grey primer color before he decided to put this lovely green on it. Since all I can find is the primer color, I'm assuming the last owner stripped it completely so no identifying marks are left.

Serial number on the BB shell? At least let's get it to year.
|
I just sanded the backend down to bare metal and there's nothing to show that a brazed on cable stop use to be there. I've looked at all the pics I can find and nothing stands out.

That's what I get for being at work until 2:00a this morning... |
I posted the serial number. It's a 1978.
|
I can relate. I work from home and sometimes the sun rises before I know it.
|
Since this frame doesn't have a brazed on cable stop, can someone tell me if this one would work?

That would work fine ... I might have a Suntour in my parts bin if you'd like me to check tonight .... KHatful should have one if I don't ..
Scott |
That would be great. You can email me at ronscott09@gmail.com to let me know if you do and how much.
|
I'll give a look see tonight .. do you need it to be brand spanking new?
Scott |
Nope. As long as it works, I'm good.
|
Cool, what about the downtube/BB cable stop clamp? Need one of those?
Scott |
I think I have everything else. I'm going to steal the parts from my Schwinn World to get this one on the road.
|
I took another good look at the frame and I have good and bad news. The good news is I think I found a spot where a brazed on cable stop should be. It looks like it snapped off or someone knocked it off. The bad news is I'll never know what model this is suppose to be now.
|
OP, check the link in my sig for anything Mr. Ryder doesn't have.
|
I have some stuff if you need anything
|
I got rid of the green. Now I just have to transfer everything to the frame from the Schwinn World in the back.

Send you an email on the cable guide .. what are you using for a fork on that frame?
Scott |
It came with what I'm assuming is the original fork.
|
From the pics I've seen and the catalogs, it looks to me like Fuji quit using the clamp-on cable stops in 1976. Is it possible that this bike is a 76 and not a 78 and someone just screwed up when they stamped the serial number on it?
