Changing rear derailleur on a Schwinn Continental

Hey guys and gals. I haven't posted here in a LONG time, but I have a question. I have a 74 Schwinn Continental that I bought new in 1974, so it has some sentimental and cool value for me... and I still ride it. I am replacing the steel rear wheel with an alloy wheel, due to some spoke damage and rust and (while I have it off) I thought I might try a 6 speed Shimano freewheel cluster on the back. Has anyone tried this? Any suggestions on setting the limits on the Schwinn Approved Huret Allvit derailleur? Will it accomodate 6 gears? I also have the 5-speed that I can put back on if I chicken out : ) Your input and opinions are welcome.
