Peugeot is where you find it

Don't blame me, the title popped into my mind. Here is a Peugeot I got free and put 15 hours and about $75 into. I replaced the FD, tires, cables, rear shifter, freewheel, crankset (removed cotter-ed version) and saddle. She's not my size & space is tight so she's on Craigslist.

Nice looking Pug, especially for free. About the only thing missing is a correct saddle. You should have no problem seeing that one off in a hurry.

I sold a mixte this week to a fellow who drove all the way from the central Oregon coast to buy it for his daughter. I even tried to talk him out of it, but she loved it. 10 hours drive time, round trip.

Very nice Rob.
Everyone should own at least 1 blue French bike, and you're a gent and a scholar for giving one more person that opportunity!

The Peugeot Bicycle As Proof Of Murphy's

Because, like owning a VW Beetle or bus
it's an incredible learning experience.

If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong.

If there is a worse time for something to go wrong, it will happen then.

If you perceive that there are four possible ways in which a procedure can go wrong, and circumvent these, then a fifth way, unprepared for, will promptly develop.

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

Nature always sides with the hidden flaw.

Whenever you set out to do something, something else must be done first.

Every solution breeds new problems.

Nice bike. What derailleurs does it carry now and what was on it when you got it?

Looks nice. As a general rule, I don't like to publicly state how much I have in a bike that's up for sale, at least not until after it's sold. Just sayin - you never know who peeks at these forums, or what value they'll put on your 15 hours.

It came with the long cage Suntour and the Simplex w/broken plastic clamp. I used a Suntour Spirt reverse pull (defaults to big ring). I believe I used a Suntour freewheel, the original had a very weird removal mechanism that I only got the freewheel off by chance. I also had to replace the rear shift lever - the original broke. Fortunately I have a stock of old parts.

True, but I did note the 15 hours of labor. My $75 expense is cheap because I used on hand parts and shop very carefully - a shop would have charged double that for labor.

That is a long long way to drive for this bike (she's not that special). If you had talked your wife into it I'd give you a substantial discount just to earn some karma. I've gotten some responses already but it's too early to tell if they are spammers.

Jim - I don't think 15 hours is very much time at all, if you start out with a project bike. From what I can see, Rob brought it up to snuff in every way. (-A labor of love I'm sure.)

I've had worse tasks - many of them free project bikes. I've also had my share of 30 minute - 1 hour turn around bikes.

Maybe not 15 total but I did spend about 7+ on cleaning / reassembly the last two nights and this morning.
The bike wasn't in good shape. The Mafac brake dodads on the levers gave me grief this morning and the rear derailleur wanted to hit the spokes when shifting into the largest cog. The chain was too short and I had to find the right width links to add.
  • I had to drill out the cotter to remove the cranks - 2 hours
  • finding a replacement shift lever. This one has a clamp / braze-on combination so I couldn't substitute a clamp on set
  • Chrome wheels were rusted and it took time to put them through oxalic acid bath and use brillo pads in the work tub. That was followed up with Simichrome and Mothers Mag cleaner.
  • truing rear wheel - I'm not that skilled
  • headset and rear wheel bearing removal / replacement / re-grease and adjustment
  • purchase and/or finding of tires, and other parts - including Italian axle to convert to 3 piece crank
  • compounding, polishing, and waxing frame and fork
  • polishing brake levers, fork, brake yokes, stem, and other parts
  • running many parts through oxalic acid bath
  • running parts through hand wash and sonic cleaner - sometimes with degreaser

BTW - I've gotten a lot of responses - must have listed her too cheap
