Schwinn Sierra rebuild

Hey Guys and Gals:

An old friend asked me to rebuild his Schwinn Sierra. It is complete and everything on it works but I am a bit concerned about the shifters. The shifters are Shimano Unishift controls 3 x 5 speed.

The upper housing is cracked on both of them where the shift cable housing is supposed to sit, so they need to be replaced.

Is there anything on the market right now to replace a 5 speed shifter bar mount thumb shifter?

A little research on line resulted in the Falcon friction shifters from several retailers and the Sunrace friction shifters from Rivendell. Anyone used either and have input?

Niagara Cycle works has a good collection of replacement thumb shifters. These might work:

I've purchased the Falcon 5-speed thumb shifters online in the past for 99 cents each. Some people might find them alright, they have a little "ratchet" action going, but I found them to be a little too delicate to my liking. I'd even opt for the old Shimano friction thumb shifters that came on the low-end 15-speed mountain bikes. You can easily salvage them off old junk bikes.

I forgot to take before pics, but the bike had been left to rust outside. Tore it down, cleaned up the chrome bits, like bars and such as best I could with oxaylic acid and steel wool. Took the stripped down frame out and washed it by hand, the rubbed it out with automotive polishing compound, paint came out okay. Tore every component down as far as I could, cleaned, degreased, lubed and reassembled.

Have already repacked the headset and bottom bracket, just have to repack the wheels tonight, already have them torn down. Got new brake cable today, but no joy on shifters at Bike Mart or Performance. Will try to order shifters online tonight and then at least get an after shot before I give it back to what I hope is a very happy owner.

Funny story, he has been asking me if I would do this for around a year. I keep telling him to bring it by. He finally brought it over Superbowl Sunday and told me to take my time. Then a few weeks later, he is calling to see if it is done!!! Seems funny he let it sit for years and wants it back quicker than he said.

Anyhow, will try to get all but the shifters done tonight.

If you go with the shifters from Niagara, bulk up your order to spread out the S&H charges across many items. They have great deals on tires, and everything else you could want. Check the Clearance section, and try sorting by "ascending price" to catch some of the better deals. Just a suggestion.

Sounds like he has reason to be excited.
