Modern brakes on a 1990 Schwinn Caliente?

Tried searching the site and didn't find the answer to my question. Which is, can I put modern brakes (105, Ultegra, etc..) on my old '90 Schwinn Caliente? I was hoping it's be just as easy as slapping some Cane Creek levers and 105's on the bike. It's be nice if I could stop this lead weight on wheels.

Perfume on a pig.

But, you need to look at two things:
1. Mounting. Is your Caliente made for recessed or nutted brakes? Most modern calipers use recessed mounting, so you'll need to be aware if you need nutted.
2. Brake reach. What is the distance from the center of your pivot bolt - the bolt that attaches the caliper to the frame - and the center of the brake pad as it's set up now? You'll need to measure this in the same plane as the pivot, or in other words in the center in-between the brake pads. (I hope this description makes sense). It's easier to do with the caliper removed from the bike. Most modern calipers have a reach that is around 39-49mm. You may need more for your bike.

And I'm assuming you're not running hugely wide tires. If so, you need to consider clearance around the tire as well.

But as long as you match up these requirements, you should be OK.
