That one thing you've been searching for ..

What is that one or two things you've been looking for forever that you just can't find? Maybe you can't find it because it's rare, maybe it's just always so expensive, maybe something else. It could be an entire bike or just a part.

For me i can think of two things. For several years now I've been looking for both of these things with no luck whatsoever:

- vintage road shoes, something like these, in a euro size 48 or 49. I might even settle for 47 if I could get them to fit! They don't seem to exist.

- a gold or even a non gold Simplex lj LONG CAGE rear mech. I thought I saw a gold long cage once, and it went for something like $300 on ebay. The silver ones go for maybe half of that, which I never feel like paying. I'm cheap. So the search continues , as it has been, for some time now.

What about you guys? Maybe just typing about it will make it happen for one of us

I'm pretty well fixed on the old leather road shoes, having bought a couple of sets many years ago. Still have my original set from the 70's... but I sure would like an Ideale saddle. I'd probably have to sell a bike to afford one though. And yes, a Simplex SLJ would be nice too!

Non-drive side Stronglight 49D and mod. 93 crank arms. They do come up on eBay once in a while but go for far more than I'm willing to spend.

A girlfriend? I keep watching craigslist but nothing in my price range has appeared yet. Maybe my standards are too high.

But, y'know, on the bike front everything just seems to go my way. I decide I want a good Raleigh and an '85 Royal shows up. I decide I want a Cuevas and Iowegian sells me one. It took me six months to match a Normandy Competition hub but that wasn't much of a wait. The Zieleman showed up before I even realized that I wanted one . Maybe my standards are too low.

SLJs show up on the European eBays at regular intervals at good prices.

I don't know. I used to want a Motobecane Le Champion with full NR, but having ridden one, I'm not so sure now. I'm working at a bike shop that's kind of the nexus for Eurovintage stuff in the Twin Cities, so if I just hold out long enough, whatever it is I'm looking for will eventually come my way. I do work with a guy who makes some extra money flipping vintage stuff, so he and I are kind of in competition for the same things, me to keep and him to sell. Of course, he does give me a substantial discount as he jabbers all the time about what a great deal he got on this or that... so it helps I know how little he paid for some of this stuff.

I guess at this point all I really want it is a Gen I Cyclone rear mech; and if a Stronglight 105 bis came my way I wouldn't say no to it.

Beautiful Zieleman track bike hanging from the ceiling in a shop I used to race for thirty years ago!

Red, white, and expensive.

About the only older bike I desperately want nowadays is a De Rosa Titanio.

Not really C&V, but you get the idea.

A fellow in Mpls. has one in my size, but not in my price range.

A Merckx MX Leader would be swell as well.

I'll stumble onto one my size eventually.

Edit: I do have a line on a very nice Kvale criterium frameset as of today, so sometimes bikes pop back on my radar when I least expect it!

Had kind of given up on this, as I thought they were all out of my grasp.

Can you post a picture of the model 39 Balilla brake levers? I have a set of Balilla levers but don't know much about them, they could be what you are looking for.

The little plastic 3ttt medalion that pops in over the stem bolt on a classic 3ttt quill stem. I believe the one I lost had a magnet in the underside. Searched high and low, no luck.

A Mercian King of Mercia, in my size (60).

A vintage randonneur front bag. I keep missing out on eBay because I'm too damn cheap.

I'd really love a vintage Herse or Singer, but short of winning the lottery there's no way I'll ever be able to afford one.

What can't be seen in the picture is the clamp side of the levers. Newer models have the clamp on the inside of the levers. In the second picture, the clamp is covered by bar tape and looks like a bump on the inside of the bars.

A Peugeot PY10FC frameset in my size (53 - 56cm), with perfect graphics and no loose tubes, cracked seatpost clamp and complete TT cable guides and lug/tube reinforcing(?) rings......Been searching for over 2 years now and every one I found for sale seem to have these defects......
