I must be Crazy / Anyone ever make their own Tires?

Just read an interesting little article by Jobst Brandt
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/brandt/making-tubulars.html

And did a little search just out of curiosity for some Tire making machines....they're available FOB

So i figured I'd ask...have any of you ever made a tire? Can you enlighten me further about the tire making process?

truthfully it doesn't seem terribly difficult aside from making the latex impregnated fabric for the casing....need to get a very large drum

Nope, not pulling me into this one. I draw the line at toeclips, bottle cages, watch parts, auto parts, furniture, musical instruments, tools, puns....

Hmm. Interesting thought, though .

Visited a re-tread shop once, everyone was covered in glue and black dust. I've come to an point in my life where I can truly say I'd rather ride on them than make them......But your still a Young Buck....go for it!

This is the stoopidest idea I've ever heard of.

Second would be Brake Pad factory, third was Handlebar Tape Loom company.

"Stoopid" is not a misspelling. It's the R. Crumb-style spelling of "stupid," and meant to suggest that something is inane, rather than merely dull or obtuse.

Hey, another Jersey industry. Paterson was the silk manufacturing capital of the world at one time, among other industries.

Don't blame us Jersey guys for our industrial entrepreneurship. It's in the water around here. Literally.

I know, the likeness is startling. Only I would never have my bars adjusted at such a moronic angle.

You make that sound like a bad thing

A basic Tubular wouldn't be terribly hard.

1. Obtain a casing material. Some kind of woven stuff
2. coat with latex.
3. cut into long 20cm wide strips
4. double it up
5. lay an innertube inside.
6. Sew it up
7. glue on tread
8. **********
9. Profit!

I'm thinking about mining my own iron ore to build a frameset from scratch. I wonder how deep I'd have to dig in my backyard.

Because I live above an abandoned coal mine, I'll dig for the coal to fire the furnace to refine the ore. Mineral rights might be an issue, but I'll ignore that and think of the up side.

Neal we've got an abundance of "Franklin Ore" by me. Its a very low grade Iron Ore.

Ben Franklin had some mining operations that attempted to exploit it but he was never able to develop a successful process for refining the "Franklin Ore" into something usable.

Maybe you wanna give it a go? I'll be happy to mail you a box of rocks.
