Scapin content...What is it?
 

I just got this Scapin. It's a bit plaid with a mix of components. It's full chrome under the paint and has internal top tube brake cable routing. What model do you guys think it is, and what components may have originally came on it? Also, which Columbus tubeset do the sticker remnants describe? Thanks.

decal says: "SL", and there were many Scapins with cromovelato finish, can't find one in the '81 or '83 catalog with internal brake routing, though.

Were there just not very many Scapins running around?

Looks like an SL sticker......Only has front eyelettes, is that a replacement forK?
Looks like a nice one once cleaned up, hope that seatpost and stem are not stuck though......judging from the muddy BB, it has seen some rain rides in it's life......

I've seen a few in NorCal, even had two pass through my hands and on to other folks: one was metallic green, one white. Neither one was a top model nor in perfect shape, the green one had a tube replaced, the white one was a rust-bucket worse than this example. They are fairly rare but have a rep for very fine building. Also a line that offered a lot of lower price points: cheaper tubing options and low-cost component gruppos, like all that Rino stuff. Tended to be pretty 'bling-y' even at the lower end: chrome and cromovelato finishes aplenty.

I sent a high end one through ebay last year, Columbus SL, SR panto'd parts. Honestly one of the sloppiest, least impressive "craft" frames I've seen. The lugs were sloppy and the paint was off because they didn't apply the primer correctly. Bike was a dog.

From the frame details and decals, I'd peg this as a late "veiled chrome" SL model, shortly before Scapin's transition to SLX. Probably around '87 to '88. I had a '90 Scapin that was full SLX, and loved it. I currently ride an '02 Scapin with a carbon fiber fork -- it's probably about as light a steel frame as could be built, and is an absolute joy to ride. Lots of Scapins in the Philadelphia area, for two reasons: (1) Bike Tech, one of the high end Philly bike shops of the '80s (since absorbed into the Bike Line conglomerate) sold a ton of Scapins in the mid- to late '80s, and (2) The Italian Cycling Center, which operates a cycling camp in the Veneto region of Italy and has its U.S. base in Philly, had a deal with the Scapin factory, and many camp attendees brought one (or more) Scapins back home with them. I had the opportunity to visit the Scapin factory several times and to have my bike fitted by Umberto Scapin, the company's founder. Sadly, Umberto passed away about a week ago at age 83.
