Very nice bike!

I'm restoring a similar '50's randonneur that is nearly identical except for the brakes. Mine's got Mafac cantilevers, and is badged "Realty" from Chartres. I've only been able to get the Simplex Grand Tourisme derailleur to handle a 4 speed freewheel. I don't think it has enough throw to go 5 speeds, even with 3/32" chain.

Wow, that bike is perfect. What a great find! I hope you end up fitting it with just a little seat post adjustment. And the bag is gorgeous! Is it a TA bag?

I have tried my leather seat on there to see how it looks.
The bag is a Narbel i think!

Here are some photos

Maybe a bag support that straps around the seat post and extends behind the seat?

You have your bag rack on upside down I believe. It goes over the bar, under the stem and the "confusing" piece goes around the head tube .

Ok thanks but i'm trying to visualise what you mean.
The bracket on the bag also has a longer piece that is under the bag holding the weight.

Ok so i have removed the bag and it seems that you are right!
The bit under the bag is swirly shaped and it seems to fit over the bars and then around the stem.
I'm confused with the other bit still though! I fits around the head tube no problem but how does it connect with the other bracket?

It looks to me like it straps around the seat post (supported largely by friction it seems) and supports the weight of a saddle bag. Sort of an old version of this.

Thanks!
Because when the bag is fitted it seems secure without using this extra mystery piece.

I don't think so, the rubber piece is much larger than the diameter of the seatpost.

Daveyates, I am not sure, is there any place on the bag bottom where the ends might slide into? Any wear marks on the rack that might indicate where they have been crossed or touching at any time?

I assumed the strap goes the full way around the circular black rubber part and bends the rubber in to squeeze the seat post.

It could be, I understand what you are saying, maybe it is a front and rear set?

I have just been reading about selling items on the forum and i have realised that i shouldn't of mentioned it in the post here.
I shall start a trial subscription and post the bike in the appropriate forum.
Sorry for not reading about it first!
I shall also add other nice french items for sale as well if there is enough interest for it.
Thanks

At this price it is a gift to somebody. Way too small for me, but if tehre is somebody out there that it fits, you could do far worse...

If anyone is wondering about the front bag support, there is a derivative version which was once sold by Park Bicycle Tools currently for sale on eBay... [ see eBay Item number: 110658897047 ]

I love eBay Sellers like this one who offer nice clear photos!
