Second Annual Chicago Spring Classic & Vintage Ride

Cancelled. Cancelled. Cancelled.

WHAT: Open invitation to a ride for anyone who reads this post, and their friends. Riding your vintage bike is highly encouraged but all bikes and riders are welcome. This is a no drop ride but there is no SAG support.

WHEN: Saturday April 16, 2011. Meet at 8:30, start ride at 9:00 am.

WHERE: Crystal Lake Main Beach Parking Lot - here

FORMAT: A nice leisurely 30-mile ride, flat as a pancake, tacos at the end of the ride. Got a Garmin? Download the route. Loop 1 of this cue sheet is 95% correct, it does not include directions to the taqueria.

No-Drop rule, B-group speed.

Only moral support is provided. You must provide your own fluid/food for the ride. There is a stop at a quiky mart at the halfway point for food and drink.

WHY: This is meant as a social ride. It is an opportunity for Bike Forums members, friends and acquaintances to get together and meet, and ride together in a group. And eat some great tacos, or torta, or burrito or whatever floats your boat. Last year's ride.

Feel free to bring non-BF riders as well, but remember this is not an “organized event”. This is simply a large group ride.

Please spread the word to anyone else you think might be interested.

I would love to do this. Wife could go shopping with the kids as I don't think she'd be up for a 30 mile ride no drop or not.

iab, have you put the route on Mapmyride? I know I can get it there, but I don't have a Garmin.

Are you outing this on CR?

Henry, I could leave my wife at Old Orchard for the day, unless she wants to ride it. But between OO and Evanston, she'd be happy.

I'm a definite 'maybe' at this point. Sat on my backside all winter and got winded working the floor pump this morning.
Hopefully in a bit better shape by then. Should have the 'pimped' Ross finished and riding that.

Yay!

I had just been thinking of PMing about this. It was a nice ride last year, a bit chilly in temperature but not in attitude.

Thanks to iab for pulling it together again! And for riding that cool-as-heck Frejus.

This is on my list of things to do, hopefully I can swing it, and hopefully I'll have a road bike back in order by then. Wanted my Fuji or Nishiki to ride, but rode the schwinn mtn bike today and was glad to have it.

Also a definite maybe! I'd love to, and I Think I can, but I'll have to make sure I can get out of work. Maybe I can get the Ellis-Briggs together by then. Otherwise I can be the one there with the beater looking bike from a no name brand that's made from Tange Champion 2 and rides nicely.

Now I just have to start getting out there to ride so I can actually keep up with all you old guys. Today will be basically my first ride since fall.

BigPolishJimmy, if you make it down and our plans match up, and if it's somewhat on your way, let me know if you'd like to work out a carpool or something. You might talk to khatfull too if he plans on going. I know he comes from somewhere up there and ended up going right past Madison on his way down last year.

Nuts. I'll be in Arizona that weekend. I intentionally scheduled that weekend as there's a big swap meet in Tucson that weekend. Nuts.

Oh, well. We'll just have organize another ride in the city at some point....

Have fun!

This sounds great. I was tempted to join last year, but had too much going on. I think I'm in, but have to make sure I don't have any other commitment.

I'll bring my International. Anybody interested to drive to Crystal Lake together?

The link I posted is to Ride With GPS. Pretty much the same as MapMyRide but with less ads and faster.

I didn't think of it, but i will send to the CR list.

I'm going to try and get in on this. But, an 8:30 am meet up time means leaving my house at 4:30am.

That ain't happening.

Any decent but cheap motels nearby?

edit: With the time zone difference it means leaving my house at 5:30am. Which still ain't happening.

3-speed I'd love to carpool, but geographically--unless I'm missing something--I think that would mean that I'd need to first travel north in Michigan, take the ferry across the lake, then head back south. Sounds fun but a bit out of my way, now Bill on the other hand lives 45 min northwest of me. If he left his house at 5:30 and headed my way he'd reach me about 6:15, which would be almost sleeping in for me... but as he mentioned 'that ain't happening' ;p ...hey Bill want to carpool?

Mid April would still be a bit brisk for camping... hmmm

$50 a night and a half mile from the start.

$100 a night, 3 miles from the start and not as scuzzy

How do you define "scuzzy"? Scuzzy as in dilapidated and run-down, or scuzzy as in rooms-by-the-hour, bedbugs and gunplay?

Its clean and safe, definately old. No gunplay or hookers in Crystal Lake. I'd say maybe Elgin is the closest place if that's your thing.

Yeah, I'd drive with you. I'm just around the corner from Old Orchard and the Cook County Court House. PM me and we can set something up. Probably 90% chance I'm going.

That's right up my alley. I like the motels that you can wheel your bike into the room, right from the parking lot.
