Bought Duopar Eco

I just bought this Huret Duopar Eco on Ebay. Does it appear to have the tabbed washer needed to make it work? I am planning to use it with a NOS Suntour 14-38 5 speed freewheel.

It has the correct tabbed washer for a Huret claw. It may also work on a Huret dropout hanger.

Huret dropout hangers work the same way as the Huret claw:

If the OP has a standard dropout, some filing may be needed to make it work properly.

Wow, the Windsor I'm working on has a Huret Duopar that attaches to a standard dropout hanger. Maybe I should sell it separate.

That's a kind of wacky but nice setup. I really like mine.

Huret offered washer kits for either standard or Huret dropouts. That's the only difference.

Holy crap. A Benjamin for a 30-year-old steel derailleur? Dang.

They had tabbed washers available for Campagnolo-style hangers as well. A Duopar with that setup attaches to an Italian frame as easily as does a Campagnolo Nuovo Record rear derailleur.

If the Duo fits your Windsor, pivots correctly, and shifts well, it IS the right one for your dropout. No need to separate. There's a lot of value in trying to ride a bike to figure out what's right and what's wrong.

Duopar prices are all over the place, unfortunately. Keep your eyes open, you'll see some for $20.

vonfilm 03-22-11 06:53 AM

A hundred dollars is a lot but this is said to be NOS.

rootboy 03-22-11 06:58 AM

No offense, but, if that's NOS ...I'll eat my dropouts.

I asked the seller about your allegation and this was his reply. I tend to believe him. I see years of bike shop grime but no wear and tear.

Dear vonfilm,

It is indeed new old stock, never mounted to a bicycle.
it still has the
little piece to attached at the factory to anchor the cable down. It has a
little residual grease and dirt from being at a bike shop for the past 30
years. Look at my feedback, I have over 5000+ at 100%. I am not out to scam
you.
your friend is misinformed.

-senditnow

What say you all? Does this part show wear and tear?

I say it's NOS, most definitely, just look closely at the jockey wheels. I put a NOS Duopar on my latest build, and within the first 100 miles it looked more used than the one you got.

cudak888 03-22-11 09:54 AM

Concur - beat-up, but NOS.

I trust it's working well for you, then?

Yes! It barely manages the lateral width of an 8-speed cassette with the limit screws mostly out, but it works great and handles every cog with aplomb!

I believe eBay seller senditnow is the Via Bicycle folks in Philadelphia.

If I keep my eyes open, I'll see the four I already have in my parts stash.

Grand Bois 03-22-11 06:24 PM

People think that the titanium Duopar is that blue-gray color because it's titanium. Actually it's that color because it's painted. I can't understand why they would want to paint titanium. It's nice to look at. They make jewlery out of it. It would have made more sense to rust proof the Duopar Eco with paint.

Yeah, it's weird. It's happening with all the French derailleurs that were any good. I remember a couple of years ago the better Simplex Supler LJs were going for very reasonable amounts; now they're through the roof. Same with Jubilees. I guess the Duopar is heading toward that same trajectory.

Why couldn't I have developed this obsession a few years earlier?

Captain Blight 03-22-11 10:15 PM

So... What's the word on initial setup and adjustment and chain length?

O grasshopper, enlightenment strikes when it will ...

What's the question? Basic techniques apply, except perhaps the various chain-length rubrics (I just haven't tested these). It's a friction piece, with high and low limit screws. The chain length issues are the same as for anything else. Don't let the chain get too tight, nor too loose. Fine-tuning can involve adding or removing links, as you continue to ride it or change the gearing.

I wish I could mount mine. I threw away the tabbed washer that is required for mounting my duopar. It was for the campy dropout if I remember correctly. I read somewhere in the forum about this tab being fabricated, but I cant find it anywhere. Does anyone have a source for this jewel?
