Another freewhee removal help thread
Help!
I bought a set of Pelissier Pro Hubs/Mavic tubulars off of Ebay. The rear hub has the freewheel on but it looks like the core of the freewheel is gone. http://s1110.photobucket.com/albums/...pat/Freewheel/ What is the best way to get this off? Thanks in advance. |

What brand freewheel?

Can't tell the brand from the photo, but given that it's an old 5 speed, old brands like Cyclo, regina, Everest and others come to mind. First of all is the freewheel working, as in freewheels backward, and drives forward? If so it's complete nad nothing is missing.
Look at the static part (turns with the hub, not the outer part with sprockets) of the freewheel for a raised or sunken ring with notches, or splines on the innermost clearance. That's what a removal tool needs to engage, and hopefully they'll be of a size and type for which removers are still available. If you're still not sure, the brand and a well lit photo focused shot straight on, so the axle is out of the way and focused on the inner body may help us help you. BTW- back in this era, many freewheels needed to have the axle removed first in order to remove the freewheel. |
That pic has sharp focus on the racks in the background, but can't tell much of anything about the FW since it's all blurred. Except it does look like a Regina (or similar) 5 speed... shoot another pic (in focus this time).
Sounds like, from the below, that you have a 2-notch Regina FW, get the proper tool (and don't try a Suntour 2-notch if it's a Regina, that won't work!). |
I have misplaced my true camera so that is a cell phone picture. Hence the bad quality. The rim has 0973 stamped on it which might be a date stamp. The freewheel is working so it must be complete. It just seems backwards compared to the Suntours/Maedas I have. There is a notch at 5 o'clock and one at 11. I will take a measurement and post it. Maybe the correct removal tool can be determined then.

The Notches are in the threads that screw onto the hub. The distance between the inside edge of the 2 notches is 1.3 Inch/34mm. The distance is 1.5 inch/38mm to the outside edge of the notches.

The LBS Idea sounds like the plan!
But for curiosity and info's sake, I will continue until I can make it to the LBS. I am not at my shop right now but the notches are about a 1/4 inch wide and 1/8 inch deep. They are recessed in the ring they are cut into. The ring they are in is threaded on the inside and outside. The inside threads screw onto the hub. The outside threads are what the cogs are screwed onto. If you look at the back through the flanges of the hub, you can see the bearing /race access plate. So to service this freewheel you would need to take it off and service it through the back. This freewheel looks like it is backwards from the Maeda/Suntours I have. The ebay seller said that the hub/wheel combo came from a 70's era St. Etiennes bicycle. The Mavic rims have 0973 stamped under the SPORT so 1973 might be the year. The freewheel is probably french but you never know. |
Well I contacted a local fellow C&Ver, Poguemahone for advise on which LBS to take it to. He offered to come over and bring his removers and help! Nice person by the way.
Anyway, he takes a look and is not familiar with what we are looking at and has no tool to fit. Advises to try and remove the individual cogs and go from there. Then we go out and look at some cool bikes he has acquired. When I come back in I decide to make my own remover. I look around, find some metal , do some grinding and see if it will fit. Put it in the vise , mount the wheel and give it a tug. It came right off. So that problem is solved and I can use the hub. However, in the quest for info, I had to find out more about the freewheel or it would kill me! So I looked and thought and looked some more and thought some more. Then I took Poguemahone's advise and tried to remove the cogs one by one. The first 2 came off together and..... exposed the front plate! The freewheel turned out to be a Merveille. I'm not going to use it but would like to know about it. So..... can anyone tell me about Merveille? I typed into a search engine and Merveille 3 speeds come up but no others. I will start another thread on Merveille freewheels. Thanks again in advance. |
