The One That Almost Got Away--1990 Trek 1000: Before and After Pictures

When I saw a Trek 1000 listed for $75, I knew I needed to act fast. When I didn't get a call or an email right away, I thought I had missed it. However, later the next day, the owner called. He said that I was the first to respond and that he was giving me the first opportunity. He said that he had probably listed it too low. He told me that over 50 people had responded to his Craigslist Posting. Thankfully, he didn't start taking bids or highest offers. I couldn't come that evening, so I arranged to meet him the following morning. Even though we had an agreement, I fully expected the deal to fall apart. I called him the next morning, and everything was go. When I reached the house, he showed me the bike, and I quickly paid for it. Thankfully, the owner held true to his word.

Since then, the bike has been fully serviced (hubs, headset, and bottom bracket), and the tires, tubes, chain, freewheel, cables, and handlebar tape has been replaced. I've only taken it for a short ride, but it feels great. I'm looking forward to riding it this summer.

Nice score, very uncommon for a seller to resist the urge to allow a bidding war. As a side note, the Schwinn Prelude I picked up for my wife recently has the same group and brakes, it's a nice change from the typical Shimano stuff I've been finding and it works great.

Thanks Chuckk. I like the color of your bike. I agree--for an aluminum bike, it is not light. Also, thanks for the information on the construction. This will be the second bike I own with Biopace cranks. Your response is appreciated.

Great snag bikemanbob! (Some people pay that much for a white San Marco alone!)
Don't wait till summer to ride it though!

He surprised me too. I do think the price was low but fair. I did considerable work on the bike and replaced several components. However, I do feel fortunate to have it.

Looks just like the one I found at a GW for $25. Would've been a keeper had it been my size. I added new tires and sold it for $250 the next day in the aweful KC CL market. Nice bike.

Thanks Auchen! Truth be told the saddle is a Women's Specific Design, but my butt don't know the difference. Thanks so much for your help and advice.

Although it is a nice bike, there is not anything real special about it. I wouldn't have guessed that a Trek 1000 would be worth that much. Thanks for the information. Very good to know.
