'73 Schwinn Sports Tourer
I've got a lead on a "cherry, near-mint" 1973 Schwinn Sports Tourer that came from the estate of a DuPont.
Anyone have experience with these? Are they heavy tanks or??? ANY input or thoughts are appreciated!

They were the 3rd highest priced Schwinn in their line up behind the Paramount and the World Voyager. I'm on my second Sports Tourer and it's one of my favorite bikes in my collection. These were handbuilt in the same factory as the Paramounts but were sent in with the lower Schwinns for paint. Check out my Sports Tourer I'm building up. It's a little extreme but I'm pretty sure it's the only like this. The only thing is with the Schwinns is that they use oddball sizes on their headsets, seatposts, stems. I had to do some sleeving to use a standard 1" headset. I say pick it up as they're no Paramount but you can get some decent money on eBay for them. As for weight, their not lightweight to modern day or higher quality european stuff of the same period but their nice bikes. My Sports Tourer is a first year(1971) that was a one year only color(Silver Mist) but had it repainted to a similiar silver. I say pick it up if you can get it for a decent price.

They have quite a nice ride, but are heavy.

I would not hesitate to add one to my collection if such an opportunity knocked.
While they are heavy, the ride and handling are exceptional.

I just revamped a '77 Schwinn Superior which is the same frame as a Sports Tourer. I wouldnt call it heavy. I'm guessing its in the 25 pound range and doesnt ride heavy at all. Nice thing about them are the low bottom brackets. Very stable yet lively ride.
